Karsak did a great job creating back story for one of Shakespeare's greatest female characters. I was totally intrigued by the world she established when the girl who will become Lady Macbeth is growing up and entering young adulthood. If you know Shakespeare's play, you'll enjoy this novel even more. I never thought I would feel sympathy for Lady Macbeth, but Karsak has done that. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I was a little nervous about reading this book thinking it might be a bit too romancy, but instead I found a great story, with a strong female protagonist and a bit of history to boot.

Gruoch, an intelligent young woman, is caught up in the political perils of Scotland at the time. She should be amongst the nobles of the land, but because of disagreements about who constitutes Scottish Royalty, she lives remotely (and hopefully more safely) away from the political strife. But Gruoch also has a more mystical heritage, and heads off for training to bring her talents and potential skills into play.

I enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to reading the second in the series.

A wonderful, magical book. If you like The Mists of Avalon, you will like this. A sympathetic view of Lady Macbeth's early life, when she is a noblewoman and a student of the Goddess. What an interesting idea! Romance as well. Only problem is, it's not long enough and leaves you wanting more. Can't wait for the next installment--please, pretty please??

I love Celtic fantasy and retellings. This author as done a fabulous job. Can't wait to read the next installment. This is very different than Susan Fraser Kings 'Lady Macbeth' (which I also thoroughly enjoyed). Love the Shakesperian and Arthurian references. Highly recommend.

I became a fan of Melanie Karsak's writing when I read about Lily Stagazer in her Airship Racing Chronicles. Therefore I knew I would probably enjoy Lady Macbeth. It has elements of historical and paranormal romance, both of which I love to read, plus it is by a favorite author.

Enjoy it I did! Book 1 in a planned series of 3, Lady Macbeth: Daughter of Ravens tells a very dark, compelling tale about Gruoch, the future wife of Macbeth, king of Scotland. History, literature, stage, and screen have depicted Lady Macbeth as ruthlessly ambitious and possibly insane. In Lady Macbeth, I read about a young woman, struggling to claim some control over her own path in life.

Gruoch is the daughter of a nobleman, so her place in life is determined by those in power. On the day she was born, her father marked her for the gods to use to someday destroy his enemies. In her teens, she waits for King Malcom to determine her husband.

Before others have a chance to enforce their will on her life, Gruoch becomes a sister, one of nine, in a coven, learning the mysteries of the old ways and of the Goddess Cerridwen, who's name she assumes. She learns of magic. She learns of her past life. She finds there are so many more mysteries in life that she can pursue. It is a life that is far removed from what King Malcom would have her live. And as Cerridwen, she finds her soul mate.

But in a great story, nothing good last forever. Cerridwen finds her control over her own life's direction is soon circumvented.

I relished seeing Cerridwen (for this is the name I now call her) grow in her belief and her abilities as a person of magic. Whether you call her witch, wizard, or enchantress, it does not matter. Cerridwen quickly matures into a woman of both ability and wisdom.

I am an eclectic reader, which makes it so perfect that I would find an equally eclectic author like Melanie. She could write the weather report and I would be enthralled! No matter what genre she tackles, she does it with such unfettered passion and devotion, and I have no doubt that I will love it. Lady Macbeth was no exception.

I hadn't read Macbeth since high school (which is longer ago than I would like to admit) and I don't remember a whole lot about it. The witches are the first characters that come to mind, and lots and lots of death. I mean, it's a Shakespeare tragedy so you know it's not going to be a happy story. All the characters can't possibly stroll off into the sunset, and I found knowing that to be unexpectedly liberating. There is no need to fret over your favorite characters since you know most of them are going to die. Don't get too attached. ;)

Melanie has taken a story that most of us know and hate (Let's be honest. We hate most books we were forced to read in school), and she has made it easy for a present day reader to fall in love with it. There isn't a lot of olden english to slog through, and a lot more sexual tension than your average Shakespeare play. Lady Macbeth will appeal to a wide range of new readers.

The story is so complicated and detailed and I'm so glad Melanie decided to split it up into a trilogy. This does slow down the pace, but it allows the time to fully explain everything that's going on. Characters are just beginning to develop and change, and my curiosity is definitely piqued! I can't wait for the next book to see how Gruoch moves to take her place in the classic story.

A copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
