Highlander II: The Quickening 1991/90min/R **
Something went wrong here in Highlander II: The Quickening Highlander wasn't really considered a classic by all critics but to me it was. We had a 16th century warrior become immortal in 1586 and now 400 years later he finally defeats Kurgen and clames the prize of becoming mortal in 1986. Now we go into the future of 2024 where the Earth is now covered by a Sheild (which was created in 1999) due to what happened to The Ozone Layer breakdown. When Connor MacCloud was watching the Opera (very well done) he flashsback to a place called Planet Zeist??? Now just wait a minute is this film saying there aliens??? Now that just dosen't make any sense at all. The only reason why i give it 2 stars was some decent performances, and somes good effects. Otherwise the story and the plot are absoutely ludricous and stupid.
Highlander II: The Renegade Version 109min R ***1/2
After hearing some good reviews about the Renegade version i decided to check it out. When i watched boy man this film was pretty darn good it clears things up. Instead of The Planet Zeist
now its refered to as A Very Long Time Ago (sorta of what Stars Wars would start out of). So my guess is that there from the past in alternate time period instead of another planet. Now that makes sense. I also noticed with in the film some dialouges have been cut out of the Quickening version and added new scenes to it. Some of the sheilds FX were redone now there more like orange looking rather than purple in The Quickening. CGI effects were used as well like the new computer screen.

The "Renegade Version" of Highlander 2 is promised as having corrected all the things that made the film as orginally released such an abomination. In particular, they remove all references to the "dreaded planet Zeist." Well, thank heavens for small favors! Yes, the words "planet Zeist" are deleted, but that's about all you can say for it. The scenario they used as a substitute is no more coherent, it still doesn't fit into the rest of the Highlander universe, and it _still_ leaves this a gawdawful film.
The only real reason to see the Renegade Version--and this applies only to the DVD--is to hear the commentary track by a number of the movies' makers. This is interesting to Highlander afficianados mainly because it quickly becomes clear that THEY STILL DON'T GET IT. It's truly amazing that these people who engineered a marvelous first film, and a very good tv series, never actually understood what the elements were that appealed to the fans.
Don't view this movie as a Highlander experience. View it as an object lesson in filmmaking and the entertainment industry as a business.

If this was 1991 I would give it 1 star.

Now after seeing a lifetime of garbage that passes for movies this little gem has earned it's stripes. It's stupid cheesy ridiculous fun.

I showed this movie to my friends who like bad movies, now I am the cool guy and I am nailing all the fat chicks, THANK YOU highlander 2!

When Highlander II came out people were walking out of the theaters only halfway through the movie in droves! Probably no other sequal within 10 years of its making caused so many complaints from movie audiences.

There probably isnt a better example in Hollywood history of how how studio execs. took the biggest potential money making series and nearly killed it with one film.

Any reviews you read stating "its not that bad" are highly suspicious.

Dont buy it, dont rent it....its not even worth watching just because your curious about how bad it really is.

Highlander 2 was originally based around the concept that the Immortals (including Connor McCleod and Ramirez)were, in fact, aliens from a distant planet known as Zeist. Only when they were exiled from their homeland to Earth were they cursed with immortality that can only be taken from them if their heads are cut from their bodies. It was an attempt to give fans of the first film what they wanted - an explanation on why Immortals are, well, immortal. But these seemingly good intentions didn't work out so well in the end. The explanation did not have to be THAT far-fetched, guys. Of course, that is why the television series and the following two films completely ignore this concept. In movie history, I don't believe there has ever been a sequel that has been so ignored by other films in the series. Highlander 2 is almost a "what if?" scenario that strays from the original formula before going right back again with Highlander 3 (though at its core, 3 is a much worse film).
The original cut of Highlander 2 was a mess, and not the version the directors, writers, and producers had been shooting for. This so-called Renegade Version revisits the material and improves upon it vastly by putting scenes in their proper order and by inserting scenes that were missing altogether the first time around. This is almost a DIFFERENT film. And, of course, almost abashedly and apologetically, the filmmakers have decided to lop out all references to the origins of Immortals as pertaining to another planet in a distant galaxy. Instead, the scenes that take place on Zeist are now supposedly part of a lost time and place here on Earth, which makes absolutely no sense at all given that there are spaceships, teleporters, holograms, machine guns and such.
