About the Author
Laurin Wittig was indoctrinated into her Scottish heritage at birth when her parents chose her oddly spelled name from a plethora of Scottish family names. At ten, Laurin attended her first MacGregor clan gathering with her grandparents, and her first ceilidh (kay-lee), a Scottish party, where she danced to the bagpipes with the hereditary chieftain of the clan. At eleven, she visited Scotland for the first time, and it has inhabited her imagination ever since. Laurin writes bestselling and award-winning Scottish medieval romances and lives in southeastern Virginia. For more information about all of Laurin’s books, please visit her at LaurinWittig.com.

The heroine, Scotia MacAlpin, at 18 is no stranger to trouble with her latest incident forcing her clan into battle and resulting into her exile from the clan. She wants to eventually become a Guardian of the Targe, a mystical stone which bestows powers to the clan who possess it. She has the idea, as she is tired of standing in the shadow of her sister, of destroying the army determined to capture the relic her clan protects. Scotia has been reckless as well as restless throughout her life.
Duncan of Dunlairig, while looking out for her throughout her life, recognizes the strength in her. When she becomes outcast, he is as well as he must still look after her. It is up to him to find her when she takes off on her own, doesn’t listen to anyone, and becomes headstrong. Helping her overcome her boredom he encourages her training and helps her become the warrior she wants to be. She discovers through her hard work and dedication to training that she has the gift of knowing. Can she use this to help destroy the enemy? She will soon be thankful for her skills as she will soon have to help the one who taught her.
Duncan and Scotia bond, although it doesn’t come easy with her temperament, through friendship and grow closer through training and spending so much time together. She must fight her way back into the clan and prove she is worth being part of the clan.
I highly recommend this and any other book written by Lauren Wittig. Her characters are strong, passionate, and each book of the Guardians of the Targe are fast paced page turning don’t want to lay down books. Anyone who enjoys passionate romance will enjoy this author.
I will be honest - I did not care for Scotia in the previous books and I did not care for her in this book either - until almost the very end. And even then, I didn't love her - I tolerated her. Duncan however, is a worthy hero and for the life of me, I can't figure out why he loves her.
Scotia does redeem herself (barely) in this final installment of the series. And as I mentioned in my review of the previous book - there was a definite "Charmed" feel to this book. The power of three and such.
I think the writing was fantastic and the story moved along quickly and stayed on point. I just really wish there was more romance - more emotion between Duncan and Scotia. But to be fair - when I finished reading the book - I did feel a sense of completion and I did believe Duncan and Scotia were in love.
I would gladly recommend this book and the entire series and look forward to this author's future work.
** I received a copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review **
That said, I loved this narrator! Phil Gigante has an excellent voice and is able to capture the spirit of the characters beautifully! I forgot it was a male I was listening to-even when he read the females lines. I will definitely listen to other books he's narrated!
Secondly, the story: great plot! Ms Wittig, I wanted to strangle Scotia (and I hope I'm spelling her name right because I'm going by sound). You wrote her so well that I wanted to slap her silly. And just the opposite was true for Duncan. So intelligent! Such a sharp eye! And I wanted to just hug him for his compassion and understanding.
This compelling story is of a strong-willed, stubborn and fiery lass who finds who she really is in the shadow of her older sister and cousin. She finds herself with the help of her childhood protector, Duncan. They both come to realize their love for one another in the process.
The conclusion to the Guardian of the Targe series. Must read!
