Their clandestine meetings spark much interest, learning as we go along, that Kuini is an excellent artist who learns to read, with help from Coyotl. These characters are so engaging that every time they meet, there's a bit of anxiety for their well being. They can be found out and attacked at any time, yet they still keep meeting, each entranced with the other's background stories and adventures.
Adding to the mix is a poor servant girl who just so happens to be one of their sisters and adds to the romance and mishaps that go on between the two young people infatuated with each other. Customs demand that those two star-crossed lovers may never find each other again, once the girl is fobbed off onto a husband she does not want, just so her father can appease the leader of another land.
When Kuini puts his hand on the exalted Great Pyramid, for the very first time in his life, not only is he spiritually-lifted up and is enthralled to touch such a magnificent structure, but the descriptions have you right alongside him, feeling the cold stone and marble, and sharing his excitement.
The descriptions of when Kuini gets to see the revered hidden drawings and writings kept in the temple, makes you feel as if you are honored to see them, too.
The Highlander is extremely well written with the words pouring onto the pages as smooth as satin, leading you to be completely involved in what the main characters, and the supporting characters, may do next. Misfortunes arise that round out the story of these Aztecs of Pre-Columbia Americas that propel you forward, page by exquisitely written page.
I adored every bit of this book and highly recommend it to everyone.
When you have a chance, please visit this author's blog to see the lifelong research and endeavors she has put into the study of, and the sharing of, the Aztecs.
From pyramids, to temples, to palaces, this novel is rich in historical detail. Excellent, easy to read prose and an intriguing storyline kept me hooked to the very end. There were plenty of conflicts hampering the lives of all the well-drawn characters. It is a rich novel about Pre-Columbia South America that is sure to please.
