We meet Yvette Stapleton, heiress to a sizable fortune, after the death of her father and step-mother, as she struggles to save herself from those who'd like to part her from her fortune. The only person she knows for certain is against her is her step-brother, Edgar.
Returning to England from Massachusetts in the early summer of 1817, she keeps her own council and seeks help from those who can be trusted: her cousin Evangeline and her husband, Ian Hamilton, the Viscount Warrick. Though she seeks assistance, I thoroughly appreciate the intelligent and independent nature of Yvette.
Immediately upon disembarkation, Yvette finds herself being chased by an unknown stranger. Fortunately for her she collides with Ewan McTavish, the Viscount Sethwick, whom she met and danced with at her cousin's wedding. Fortunately for us, Ewan McTavish is a believable hero, one whose qualities makes him desirable across all timelines.
Taking the risk of following her gut, she cautiously accepts his offer to help uncover the identify of those who would harm her. Ewan and Yvette's adventure begins at the docks of London and travels to the highlands of Scotland. Their witty banter, sexual tension, and believable dialog, make this novel entertaining and re-readable.
Not only are we treated to a well crafted novel, Ms. Cameron draws us into the story with lyrical descriptions such as this, "The fowl took to the early morning air amid a chorus of raucous scolding with frightened cries."
An excellent read!
Now at the end of war with France, Ewan is on a mission to find the spy in the War Office who almost cost England the war. Yvette is on the run for her life from a man who wants to kill her to gain her inheritance. This story pulls you into the past with vivid descriptions of London and the Scottish countryside. Yvette and Ewan keep drawing you through the book with their constant struggle to see who the dominant individual is, while at the same time running from the killer after Yvette while Ewan tries to keep her safe. Both are strong characters, and when they get together the sparks fly, both physically and romantically. Throughout their story their trials, adventures, and heartache cause them to draw closer together to their HEA.
Ladies, you will certainly find Ewan interesting as he is that strong hero who does not back down from danger but does ultimately learn to share his feelings. However, he is never a wimp and ultimately completely wins Yvette’s heart. A heart she thought she never would give to anyone.
The author kept it fast paced again, as you get to know Yvette and Ewan better, after they were briefly mentioned in book 1.
The characters were believable and real as the plot unfolded in this well written historical romance. I simply could not put it down and enjoyed every moment. From the moment Yvette was introduced you are engaged into her story. Learning more about the heiress and her hasty departure from Boston to England. Struggling with trust because of her wealth she did not know if Ewan's attention was genuine. But as the plot unfolds and the scenes build you learn about his honorable attentions and his long lasting love for this feisty woman.
Being an agent for the War office, he was assigned to protect her on her route to Somersfield. He would stop at nothing protecting her, even to force her hand in marriage, all to keep her safe.
A story of spies, murder, greed, lust and the awakening of the heart, you are enthralled from the beginning to the end.
A beautiful love story that will keep you hooked till the very end.
Well done Collette.
