This book is a stand alone but believe you me, you are going to want book two of the series as soon as you are done!
He has mesmerizing, passionate dark brown eyes flecked with gold and long raven black hair.... He's the epitome of the expression "larger than life" as he exudes power and magnetism. Creighton Matheson is massive in size with an overwhelming personality...he's a commanding force who compels a room when he walks in. It's as if he's a misplaced medieval warrior in the 21st century. He's Laird over Clan Matheson and Mathe Castle. He's tender and compassionate yet fierce and protective. He's one hawt piece of yummy cheeeeze...and he harbors a profound secret.
Paisley Munro arrives in Scotland with her Grandmother expecting to attend a funeral and then be off, back to the States. She is completely unprepared for the paranormal adventure that lies in store for her. Paisley is a golden blond haired, unassuming beauty with big sky blue eyes masked by thick black glasses that continually slide down her nose. She's beautiful in her geeky, book-wormish kind of way. She's strong and competent with a little spark and sass when riled. She's blessed with a shapely figure but is fairly oblivious to her attributes. And Paisely has a mystical, magical power within her. A gift. And she keeps it hidden...a secret.
I absolutely gravitated to this entire, fabulous story. I love stories where the guy does the chasing...I dunno, I guess I'm "old school" and don't like to see women grovel or chase men. So this story wrapped it's big arms around me and reeled me in from its beginning. I loved how the Matheson Clan still held to their Scottish traditions and strong family values in a 21st century setting, yet giving the story a slight medieval flavor. Outstanding! I loved Creightons' possessiveness of Paisley and how he immediately acts upon his attraction to her. He wastes NO time at all... He's obsessed. He's found his mate and he knows it without any doubts. I loved Paisleys strengths and sense of loyalty as well as her sass. In fact, the very things that Creighton loves about Paisley ends up keeping her from committing herself to him.
The dialogue was so passionate and witty with extremely humorous situations between the three brothers....Creighton, Ronan and Bryce. It had me rolling on the floor with laughter. This author did a superb job conveying each situation to me...from the drama and suspense to the passion and paranormal intrigue. I fell hard and heavy for each macho Scottish male in the story...but none more than Creighton. I'm only sorry I've never read this author until now....she's quite talented. Brava Ms. Davis. Encore!!
This would easily have been 5 stars for me, but the h turned me off at times with her attitude, she was a love/hate character for me. She was just a tad disagreeable.
There is passionate lovemaking, HEA with many bumps to reach it, wonderful secondary character's too. No cliffhanger's either, but I wished the author would have included an Epilogue because I wanted to know more about the future for this couple.
Our H was a perfect alpha male. This takes place in modern times in Scotland, a country I visited a few years ago, because I loved the novels I read about the people and their love of their country.
I am not going into the premise of the story, as it has been told, but I highly recommend this story. (ljb)

"Ye'd do well to be afraid of me, for I want ye naked, beneath me like I've never desired another woman before."
When American, Paisley Munro and her Gran, Effie, arrive at Matheson Lodge for a family funeral, the last thing Paisley expects is to be attracted to the Laird. But she is and it's not long before they discover each other has secrets. And with a superb chemistry, their story is filled with fight, lust, emotion and some laugh-out-loud humour
"Are you shy? What's wrong, big guy? Afraid to show me your Scottish bagpipe?"
There were elements of this book I loved and those I loved less so. The storyline is great, it has momentum and introduces us to a plethora of characters with their own stories to be told. But as much as I was cheering Creighton and Paisley on, equally they frustrated with her flitting from feisty and stubborn to a bit of a cry-baby and he being overly possessive; granted he's alpha in both human and shifter form, but his possessive nature was a touch off-putting at times.
Vonnie Davis is a new author to me and, once I had gotten my head around the written Scottish dialect which at first read a little more Irish to me, I liked her style and found it a well-paced, enjoyable read. And with Bryce's story set up nicely, I look forward to seeing what lies in store.
Wouldn't it be something if there were shifters amongst us.....I hope there are but even if there are not, then those who write about them please continue and it gives me great pleasure to read the books.
I liked the grandmother character particularly in this book. An older woman with some spunk....fabulous and I bet she wears purple with a red hat. Looking forward to reading the next in the series.
Paisley's Gram is so funny and I love the idea that Paisley can communicate with animals. The relationship between Paisley and Creighton is sweet and electrifying at times.
