This and "Rumbo al Hermoso Norte" are great ways to learn all the more colorful phrases not found in small dictionaries.
After these, you'll be able to hold your own in any bar in Mexico. You might also end up in jail after starting a fight with some
local. The stories are also fun and colorful and give one more of an insiders look at Mexican culture. Hija looses me when it
goes all woo-woo and she becomes a saint. I need to stay more grounded.

I adored this book! It is laugh-out-loud funny, touching, mysterious, and beautiful. Urrea is capable of painting a picture of a landscape or of an event in a few sentences so clearly that it is astonishing at times. That the story of Teresita is also that of a family member of his and that it uses in the Spanish translation the rich and at times comic language of Mexico enhances the beauty of this book. I was drawn into this book page by page, and by the middle I could not put it down, and I was sad to have it end. It is now on my personal list of top 10 books of all time, and I treasure it and thank Urrea for his years of research and beautiful writing.

Wonderful book about Mexico in the late 1800. The histroy is interesting, the story captivating. I could not put it down. The charecters are so vivid and beliveable. Anyone who knows something about Mexico will love it. I read it in English and now will buy it in Spanish - - THAT is how good it is !

This book had me in tears and laughing out loud. I loved the story and the historical background in which it takes place. The writing was superb, both in English and in Spanish. Once I started I could not put it down.

the book was wounderful ( magic historial realism ) , this book is great , for its historical and documentary contents i think La Hija de La Chuparrosa is better than "Pedro Paramo" by Juan Rolfo , "La Casa de los Espirtus" by Isabel Allende and " 100 años de Soledad" by Gabirel Garcia Marquez
