I will say without a doubt that if you are looking to do anything off the beaten path in the UP (which is most things), then this book is absolutely crucial. There are hikes for all levels of hiking experience, each with a bit of background information and spot-on directions. The hikes are all personally recommended by the author and not just a re-hash of what you read in the Hunt's Guide or some other lesser peer (if I may use an oxymoron). A complete guide to hiking the UP would take a series of books this size, but fortunately for us Eric Hansen has done all the walking himself to find the fifty that cannot be missed. I live in the UP and I had frequented many of the places in this book before it came out, yet I still was never left without some fresh knowledge regarding each and every hike. Buy this and begin walking!

I used Eric's book Memorial Day weekend 2007 to plan a series of day hikes in the U.P. The hikes he chose to highlight are indeed spectacular. The trail descriptions are helpful and accurate, to the point where I took one of the Norwich Bluff alternative routes and found the suggested, little traveled side trail with no problems. I also used this book for some route planning in the Porkies a year or so ago. Thanks for the great guide!

This is a terrific guide for Michigan U.P hikes. It provides detailed descriptions of each trail, and let's the reader know exactly how far each is. Also includes the "difficulty" level of each. Maps are included to show you exactly how to get to each trail. Entire U.P. is covered, from just over the bridge to near Wisconsin. What a great resource!

Before my Upper Peninsula hiking trip with my girlfriend and our dog, I purchased this quide to acquaint myself with some good hiking trails in the UP. While I used this guide to identify several routes (Chapel Loop is a must-see), the book tended to have many very short hikes of less than two miles. Additionally, there were some other fantastic hikes that we only learned about after talking to locals - like climbing the bluffs overlooking Bete Gris bay. Overall though, this was a solid purchase for the price, and helped us find some decent trails for our week-long trip.

This book was enormously helpful during an 11 day vacation in the Upper Peninsula during late September, which was my first trip to the Upper Peninsula. After the first couple hikes I started tearing out the pages for a hike, folding them, and putting them in an easily accessible pocket. The book is a little dated and I found a few details inaccurate. I supplemented this book with National Forest Service maps for Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests and Delorme’s Michigan Atlas & Gazetteer, which is also available from Amazon. Wherever possible try to also supplement this book with local larger trail maps or ones printed from online. And remember this book does not—nor does it claim to—include all the trails in the Upper Peninsula.

I found the trail descriptions and directions very good. The book helped me pack a lot of very nice hikes into a 5 day trip.
