I walked away with so much insight into how I get in my own way and sabotage myself in pursuit of things that matter... and tons of tools and techniques to help me STOP. Since reading the advanced copy, I've made some big changes in my day-to-day mindsets and it's really helped me unlock pieces of my potential I never knew existed. This book is a must-read for any ambitious human who's sick and tired of getting stuck.
Hilda is a really special book. Sure, there are oodles of other books about the inner critic, the lizard brain, the whatever-else-its-called... but those books pale in comparison to Hilda.
First, it's the most relatable read on the topic I've found. While it gives you a clear understanding of the science and psychology behind self-sabotage and the inner critic, it doesn't bog you down in the *why*. The book educates you just enough on all the *why* to empower you to to take action. Unlike other books on the topic, Hilda's page real estate is very focused on real life, relatable case studies and actionable steps to move forward.
Second, it's incredibly actionable. None of the high-level, philosophical banter that leaves you wondering "so what now?". None of the soft and fluffy bulls***. It's real-life, real-talk content with specific examples of how to take action. There are at least forty different actionable bits of questions to ask yourself, steps to take, and valuable tools throughout the book. I lost count after forty.
And lastly, it's downright hilarious. There are too many laugh-out-loud moments in this book to count. Despite the common theme of self-help books being serious, sometimes painful, journeys of self-learning and discovery.... the author's wit, sarcasm, and pith absolutely shine and make this book fun to read. Coach Jennie littered this self-improvement process with laughs and you'll definitely find yourself chuckling aloud.
Bottom line: this isn't your typical self-help. It's powerful, entertaining, and will undoubtedly quiet that irksome inner naysayer if you give it a read.
Hilda is your inner naysayer. She's the one who tells you that you can't or shouldn't or that you don't know enough to do whatever amazing thing you're about to do. Jennie's Hilda is not mean-spirited. Actually, Hilda is just trying to keep you safe, but she gets in our way and keeps us from doing truly remarkable things by capitalizing on our fears. It's not so much that Hilda lies, it's that she finds the very worst of us and shows us only those pieces. She misrepresents them as what we look like to the world around us. But, we all know that there's a difference between the Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But The Truth. Sure, Hilda tells the Truth...but it's not the Whole Truth.
Since I read Hilda, I have started jumping into projects with more confidence, and being confident, I am having a higher success rate than I did before. I am also feeling more empowered to make my voice heard at work and at home. This is an invaluable tool to give to college-age students and newly minted graduates (no matter the age), because it will help them sort out the fears and uncertainties from what's really at stake in a job search or a new entrepreneurial launch. But, really, it's a great tool to give to anyone who struggles with self-confidence or anxiety because it creates a non-threatening way to deal with fears that just really aren't life and death scenarios.
I **highly** recommend this book. It's an easy read, it's practical and you will find yourself in the pages in unexpected places. Pretty soon, you'll be saying to yourself, "Oh, hey, Hilda. Yeah, I hear ya. Don't worry, I've got this!"
