Directions

Science Diet Optimal Care Original Adult Cat Food Daily Feeding Guide (1 cup = 8 oz): Feed your cat 1/4 to 3/8 cup per of body weight per day; 3/8 to 5/8 cup per 5 pounds of body weight per day; 5/8 to 3/4 cups per 10 pounds of body weight per day. Helpful Tips: The above ranges are a starting point only. Your pet may need less or more food to maintain proper weight. Adjust as needed. If you are unsure, ask your veterinarian. Keep fresh water available at all times. Feeding this food for the first time? Mix increasing amounts of your pet's new food with decreasing amounts of the old food over a 7-day period. Great cat food!

I adoped a 3 year old rescue siamese cat on 3/8/2014. When I received him, he had been abandoned and was living at the rescue for several days. There he was feds this pet food; so i decided to continue the same food. My cat was extremely thin and you could see his ribs, and he had a dull coat. After nearly 2 months on the food, his coat is shiny and soft. He has put on some weight and weighs 11.5 pounds now. I feed him his portion for the day every morning at 6 AM and he grazes all day. He enjoys the food. I also noted that his stools have been less smelly compared to when I first received him. overall, a great food that I would recommend. I looked at the ingredient list compared to the cheap foods and the difference is in the ingredients. The cheap cat foods use chicken by product as the first ingredient vs. chicken with science diet.

I recently adopted a new cat and was given a small bag of Science Diet because that was what they had her eating. The idea was for me to use the bag they gave me to help slowly wean her off of it as I got her used to a new food, but once I read about how great it was and saw how much she loved it I could not bring myself to take it away from her and bought the huge 17.5lb bag! Right before I adopted her, she had to have her poor eye removed due to a tumor growing around it, and now that she is recovering and the cancer is gone I want to make sure I am extra cautious of what I feed her in order to lower the risk of the cancer coming back. Hill's Science Diet certainly has me convinced that they are the best option!

(Warning: poop talk ahead) I was also watching my neighbors cat last week who has been experiencing some diarrhea. She is very stubborn when it comes to dry food so it's very hard to get her to eat anything dry, but since Science Diet has such a great amount of fiber I really wanted to trick her into eating it. All I had to do was mix it with some water and a spoonful of wet food--she went right for it and her poop is slowly getting back to normal!

Going off of that, I have read on the internet that some people recommend staying away from dry food because cats don't have a natural thirst as their diet in the wild would have enough water in it for them to survive, and dry food obviously does not have that. But if you just add a bit of water, the kibbles absorb them up in just a few minutes, and there ya go!

I want to leave 4 stars but I just can't when my furbaby's health is involved.
What I love:
-It lasts forever; I ordered around the new year and as of April I still have at least a third of a bag left
-The kibbles are small and feel "soft" compared to other cat foods (possible because of oils?)
-She seemed to switch to the food fairly easily; usually she eats only fish flavors and this is "Original" (whatever that is...)
-Doesn't smell too strongly
-When a kibble is dropped in the water dish it doesn't separate/fall apart; pretty sturdy

What I don't like:
-Does feel a bit greasy
-She's thrown up twice on this food and some kibbles were still whole (she probably just ate too fast)
-She was 8.5 pounds at the end of December and as of April she is 9.5 pounds. Over 2014 she only gained 1 pound, in the first quarter of 2015 on this food she gained 1 pound. My cat is full grown, she shouldn't be gaining weight.

I didn't have a problem with this food before, but considering the rapid unwanted weight gain I've got to switch her to something else now.

My 2 cats have been eating this product for over 14 years! They love it and, as a veterinary technician, I love it! I know that my pet's are eating a high quality diet. If you decide to switch your brand of pet food to a Hill's Science Diet please, do so gradually. Why? Because an abrupt change in our pets diet may cause vomiting and/or diarrhea. The change over should take place over a 2 week period, gradually increasing the new diet. Oh my! I forgot about the cost for the 17.5 pound bag. If you select the "subscribe and save" option you will pay about $29.00. I priced the same product at my local stores, and they were asking about $42.00 plus tax, plus the gas in my vehicle, I don't need to go any further, you know what I'm talking about.

Please, write to Amazon to let them know what an impact it would make on our wallets to start taxing us on our purchases at Amazon.

Our cats seem to prefer this food, and our Vetrinarian recoommends this food for them. I do have to say in comparison, their fecal matter does not smell as bad on this feed compaired to others, and they do not eat as much. They have been maintaining appropriate weight, even with free feeding. I have cats that are goofy and they will not eat wet style foods, so this is pretty much all they will eat besides the greenies and lysine "treats" we give them.

When we adopted our cat, this is the cat food they gave us a small bag of, and it is the food they feed all of the cats at the shelter. We fed her the rest of the bag, and then I decided to see if she would like a different food. I wasn't being cheap, I just wanted to find a food that I could conveniently buy at the grocery store rather than going to a pet store and was not convinced that the "healthiness" of the food matters. Not 24 hours after we switched the food, I noticed our cat's fur was losing it's luster. We went through that bag and then I decided to buy more of the Science Diet and sure enough, her fur went back to being much shinier with the Science Diet. I'm sure there are other foods out there that do the same thing, but I'm not going to mess with what's not broken.
