I own the full fingered variety of these also, and I prefer these during the relatively warmer months here in Seattle.

These things are tough, comfortable and serious protection from wrist injury. When you're over 30 and support yourself and your family in a vocation where typing is a critical skill, these guards put to ease any stress about those minor injuries that a skater knows they must deal with.

I don't think these guards are appropriate for the high-speed down-hilling activities long boarders might be in to. The full finger variety probably provides the protection required for that kind of deal.

I purchased my second pair because I couldn't find my original pair as the weather warmed up, and after two years my grip tape had started wearing out the threads around one of the thumbs, and despite that I'm certain I could still have used them effectively for another two years.

Great quality, stiff around the wrist as they should be. I bought the gloves for riding my unicycle. I sprained my wrist once without gloves and it won't happen a second time.

i have to say very impressed, was really worried when i saw that they had no upper splint.
i bought these because of the nice big thick splint on the palm, and it did not disappoint, the splint is locked in by a metal stud , my guess is to stop it from moving.

the strap does a great job giving the support needed in the upper part of the hand, the leather is good. the splint is sturdy as can be, almost no flex, had a few big falls at the skate park last week and they held up really nice, did not feel much.

the bad- the stud broke after the first skate session- we will see how the splint performs when i go back out for a skate,
no upper splint, could use more padding.

they do their job much better than just your normal wrist guards- going to try triple 8 ones next.

I got these gloves because they were a combination of glove and wrist protection. Yesterday, while unicycling, I took a tumble and came straight down. No chance to roll out of the fall - just straight down. I took the full weight of the fall on my hands. If I hadn't of had the Hillbilly gloves on I would have snapped both wrists - no doubt. Great glove.

I'm an old school skater who finally got my dream trip to skate the west coast! I still do a bit of street surfing at home but never really thought of padding up... Skating pipes and bowls definitely require some protection. These wrist guards give the protection that is needed to feel safe and comfortable. They sort of remind me of wearing some old school half finger smith gloves. The sizing chart was accurate too which was nice. I would suggest/recommend these to anyone.

These have been good gloves overall. And now the reason for the 3 stars. I did notice one glove fitting a little small after a few uses and looked at the tag. Low and behold! One was an XL (as ordered) and the other was a large. Now it makes sense. I know, it's pathetic but I have been too lazy to send it back. If it were not for Amazon hitting me up for a review I would probably just keep skating and not say anything. Even though they don't fit perfectly, they still work. Think wabi sabi. I doubt I will send them back at this point but if you order them, make sure you check to ensure that you got what you ordered (if that matters to you).

I wore these for several days of dirt bike trail riding in Louisiana and Arkansas. I like them a lot. They're tough, with good joint protection. They have leather across the big knuckles, and in other places where you'd want it, and not where you don't want it. The stretchy elastic areas make for a good fit and ventilation. I'm 245 LB and have extra-giant-sized hands with thick fingers. The XL size formed to fit nicely, especially after the first day. They're snug, like they should be for joint protection. The splint does poke out into the space that would otherwise be occupied by handlebar grip, at least an inch worth. To adapt to that, I turned my hands so the index fingers were still wrapped around the grips, but my pinkie fingers are not so much. (That also caused me to keep my elbows raised, like you should for trail riding.) After a day of getting used to that, it worked fine. I didn't have trouble keeping a grip on the bars. I did have a little trouble with precise throttle control, but it got easier. I learned to treat the splint as part of my hand. Then I could let my weight ride on it, which was comfortable, at those times when I would have put weight on my palm instead, like on a hard landing. That hand position turns the splint further toward the outside. I felt that was a good position for catching my weight if I went down.
For trail riding I might have gotten the full-fingered version of these instead, since I don't have brush guards on my bike. The fingers are longer than most other open-finger gloves, which field weird at first, but it worked well. Like others have said, the glove's thumb is set back toward the wrist (further from the other finger holes) a little too far for a 100% natural fit on my hand. It felt weird but it didn't cause any trouble at all.
