Editorial Reviews

"The author spins an action-packed story of intrigue and betrayal, with an endearing romance at it's heart. I adore a good marriage of convenience tale that ultimately turns into much more - and this one is exceptional." - Rated 4 1/2 Stars by RT Magazine
"Are you a Game of Thrones addict? Have you started referring to your girlfriends as "wenches" and the husband as "my lord," really pushing for that "your grace" title you so desperately want? Well, Hailey Edwards's Hint of Frost might just be the book you've been looking for." - Heroes and Heartbreakers
"I have to honestly say this is one of the most unique worlds I have read in quite awhile and I fell in love with every page of it. The world building in this book is phenomenal and I can't wait to read more from this author and this series." - Judging the Book by its Pages

"For a novel with such a chill throughout, the author's lush writing provides an especially warm and welcome counterpoint. I found myself lulled by her rhythmic use of sentences, some long and textured and other short and sparse. Readers who enjoy minimalist writing with few descriptors would do better looking elsewhere for a fantasy fix; Edwards is a devout sensualist." - Critique de Book

"I loved this story." - Night Owl Reviews

Book Description

When her mother is murdered in her nest, Lourdes has one choice: she must marry before her own nest is seized. All she needs is a warrior fierce enough to protect her city and safeguard her clansmen. Such a male is Rhys the Cold.

Rhys’s clan is starving, but their taste for the Araneaean flesh makes them unwelcome dinner guests. Yet Lourdes threatens to melt the cold encasing his heart. When her sister is captured, they pursue their enemies, where she will discover if she’s worth her silk or if she’s spun the thread by which her clan will hang.

Every once in a while, I stumble across a book that actually treads new ground; one that is fresh without being weird; one I find myself excited to tell everybody about. This is one of those books.

Someone has murdered Lourdes' parents, making her the new maven of her clan. With the deaths of their rulers, the clan's protectors have turned on them and Lourdes must move quickly to find help. She agrees to marry Rhys, the prince of a feared warrior race. In exchange for the union, Rhys will provide his people to protect hers. And just when it seems Lourdes is pulling everything together, her sister disappears.

Lourdes and her new husband must travel out of her familiar territory to find the missing girl. On the way, she slowly begins to unravel his secrets. Rhys is much more than the cold killer everyone thinks him to be. In fact, he is quite stalwart and vulnerable. Their love story is very satisfying. One of the things I liked so much about it, is that it unfolds in a way that made me believe it. We see them peeling back the layers of armor between them, reveling in the real people beneath. It's really very sweet, without ever being saccharine.

While the love story is a big draw, there is also a solid plot moving the story forward. Lourdes and Rhys are working not only to find her sister, but to figure out who killed her parents and why. The pacing is good; I never found it predictable; and the world building is fascinating. The clan Lourdes leads spins powerful threads from their hands, sort of like spiders. They make virtually unbreakable armor, which grants them great wealth. They are a peaceful people, with unique traditions. And as we learn about them, we pick up bits and pieces about the neighboring clans, each with own ways of life.

While I admit that I probably would've fared better had I had a map of the clans or perhaps a glossary with my copy, I absolutely adored this story. Had it not been for the multiple instances where poor Lourdes' bosom was exposed to all and sundry, this would have been rated higher, but even with the abundance of that major pet peeve of mine, this was a very solid read.

The originality of the universe Ms. Edwards has created along with the multi-faceted characters grabbed my attention and wouldn't let me go. I know it sounds cliche, but I quite literally couldn't put it down. Rhys is easily a favorite hero of mine, and the well-paced developing romance between him and Lourdes had just the right hint of steam.

Recommended for fans of dangerous (yet awesome) heroes, headstrong heroines, and fantasy adventure with just a dash of heat. 4/5 Stars

Much like the spider Maven Lourdes, this book is all bravado and no bite. Lourdes' temporary husband Rhys is supposed to be a cold and vicious warrior-- literally twice Lourdes' height. However, he spends most of the book cuddling with her younger siblings and pets, being patient and understanding, and otherwise diffusing any genuine tension that might have crept up between them. Lourdes herself insists on ignoring all logic and barreling headfirst into danger (in order to prove that she is a strong and independent woman)... only to constantly need rescuing from her man. Because stupidity and bravery are not the same thing.

I just cannot not understand what Edwards was aiming for. It isn't until halfway through the book that Lourdes even BEGINS her mission. Why isn't she the least bit mad at her sister for possibly having a hand in her parents' murder? Why is half the book full of painfully boring fluff, but punctuated with some of the most crude and awkward "sexy" moments I have ever read? Did not enjoy.

This book is a typical young adult fantasy/romance in many ways. But there are some nice creative variations and a little flavor of the Game of Thrones books. I almost put it down in the beginning when the heroine said "I don't speak to traitors" to the traitors, of course, who weren't asking her anything. But even though it was not great literature, that was the lowest point, and the rest of the dialogue wasn't too off-putting. Overall a good read and the reason I'm not giving it more stars is because it is too rushed, and it needs more. It should be a book, but it feels more like a novella or short story. Also,I like happy endings but they seem trite when conflict and difficulty are too easily overcome. This author gives you hardly any time at all to feel suspense or worry for the characters. In the beginning she has help arriving before too many paragraphs. Then the heroine is a little stupid and gets seriously, perhaps even fatally injured, only to be healed inexplicably. They find what they are seeking too easily, best the bad guys too easily, get the injured healed too easily, etc. Then, at the end, a character who was hostile becomes friendly too easily and with little explanation. But it is a good story and the writer shows a lot of promise. She just needs to fill out the story and master the cliff-hanger.
