This is the first of Minger's novels that I have read and I am happily looking at her others after this read! The hero was strong and patient and the heroine was stubborn and frustrating. This story was an adventure from the beginning. The heroine became "Black Jack" to supply food for her home village and the hero was a soldier ordered to find her. The sizzle factor was mild but well placed through out the story. This HEA is pretty big after the long lead up to it. I found the characters interesting and the story wasn't quite as fast paced as I would have liked, but I truly enjoyed the ride.

Miriam Minger is a superb writer whose books reflect her intelligence, humor, and wit. She has an imagination which knows no bounds. Her men are charming, sexy, and controlling, but also conscientious and honorable. The women are intelligent, beautiful, and proud, as well as feisty and willful. The relationships are explosive and exciting(oooh boy), but still somehow realistic(at least in my mind;)). The antagonists are so loathsome and destructive that you never know if love can possibly survive, which keeps me up way past my bedtime! Miriam has a real gift for describing the many geographical settings in her books and her knowledge of language and culture is quite impressive. I am always captivated from cover to cover.

Maddie is such a great example of a brave and empowered woman! Garrett is so compassionate and endearing, he could turn any woman's loyalty in his favor. I really loved how all-encompassing this book is. I was fascinated by the heartwrenching details regarding Culloden, the resultant strife, and the havoc it wreaked on all. This book was so much more than a airy romance you read over an afternoon and forget. A+++++

For historical romance readers, this has everything--a strong-willed heroine, a gallant and honorable hero, strong secondary characters, a plot with twists and turns, drama, humor, and steamy love scenes. I was hooked from the beginning, and it held me captivated until the very end, even though at times I wanted to scream at Madeleine. (Sometimes the word "stubborn" is a better description of her than "strong-willed.") Minger writes a satisfying ending, and I love that she includes an epilogue.

However, the mistakes in the Kindle version make it a very frustrating read at times. Sometimes, letters are missing, words are repeated, etc.

I really didn't know what to expect from this novel. Assumed the story was going about a hero who slept with any female human near him and would be a total jerk to the heroine. But, I was wrong. Expected Maddie to be a innocent young woman in every sense of the word and secondly act cold toward Garrett. Wrong again. The hero was a gentlemen and never betrayed the heroine, ever. That means never thought about sleeping with someone other than her and came to tell her the truth before anyone tell her differently. What liked the best was he never considered her to become his mistress later on. When they made love he wanted her to become his wife. In most novels the leading man wants have a mistress and not a wife. Has to much pride to say he is in love with someone he has not had sex with and tossed out of his bed. Hate jerks like that. Garrettwas the opposite of that. Maddie was immature sometimes, but grew through the novel. In all the novel was good. Worth reading.

I really loved this book. I was especially relieved when it didn't contain any vulgar and over the top explicit details when it came to the "romance" part of the book like so many of the other free books resort to. I did get a little lost in the Scottish dialect sometimes but the story was great and made me not want to put it down until I was done! Well done!

What a wonderful story. Maggie is a very strong herione who takes the responsibility of taking care of her clan. Garrett has to capture an outlaw before locals are distroyed. They meet and slowly Maggie looks past Garrett being an evil redcoat while Garrett keeps his patience of allowing Maggie to fall in love.

Now what makes this story a five star to me and not a one or a two (I probally would have given this a four star but Garrett's character by himself earns one!!) is while all this is going on Maggie even with distrust resentment and bone deep hatred towards all things english she reasonably opens herself up to the possiblity that maybe not all are bad and (it helps that she finds him attractive from the get go).

Their love story itself is very sweet and well done. I'll be looking to see what else Miriam Minger has written.

I have to say that over all I liked this book, but I did find it frustrating at times. I thought that unlike some of the other Highland novels I've read, this one actually gives a lot more back ground information. There is more meat to the story as far as the reasons why the Scott's were rebeling and what kinds of things the English soldiers were doing to the Scottish clans. There was more storyline about different battles and important political people, that I have not seen in any other Highland novels. It really helped to show how hard it would have been for this couple to fall in love and why the Heroine faught the Hero sooooooo much. But on the other hand, that was what was so frustrating about the book, the Heroine Maddie was constantly bucking the hero almost to the end of the book! This is one of those stories where you can really see the damage/ stupidity of prejudice. There were a lot of typo's in this book, but it wasn't to the point were you couldnt tell what was what. Towards the end of the book I felt like the drama was almost too much, like the threat of the Hero's life was just too much and unnecessary.I liked that this book wasn't overly sexually explicit. It wasn't one of those books were every other page is another sex scene. I thought the author was very appropriate in that respect. Again, overall it was a good read, it appealed to my historical interests as well as romantic, and kept me flipping the pages.
