Ordered one for outside during warm months and 4-season porch during Minnesota cold. Arrived nicely packaged and quite healthy seems to be doing just fine outside in full sun.
9-08 update: Holy cow I have figs! My little plants is now 3+ feet tall and has 12-14 green fruit. Awesome for year one.
12-12 update: Wish I could go back and put a 5-star on this. Even in MN this plant is now a 5-foot tree and producing as many figs as you could expect from my growing season--100 maybe? Couldn't be easier to maintain and really tasty figs.

I bought this plant several months ago and it came nicely packaged. It was only about 3 inches tall and had a couple of leaves on it that later fell off leaving only a stem. I replanted it in a large pot with good quality potting soil and kept it in the sun as much as possible and watered. It didn't grow at all (dormant most likely) but I continued to care for it anyway. Then one evening one of my stupid dogs decided to destroy it. Dirt was all over the kitchen floor and what remained of the plant was lying beside the pot on the floor. The dog had nearly eaten the entire plant leaving only a mere stub of it's stem left but the roots still seemed to be intact for the most part.

Well, I gathered it up and replanted it as best I could. And guess what??! It lived and is now growing the most beautiful green leaves I've ever seen on a mere stub of a stem. I have no doubt that this plant will fully recover and I look forward to watching it grow over the summer and if it gives us some fruit then that's just a perk to me. I really love this little plant and now keep it in a location where the dog can not eat it again.

UPDATE: 5-20-13
This plant has really taken off and grown quite a bit. Lots of big, green healthy leaves. It's been growing in a large pot and can still stay there for awhile, but I might have to eventually put out in the yard somewhere. This guy is a real cutie!

UPDATE: 1-25-14
This plant has continued to grow and even put on a few figs though they never matured due to the changing weather. The plant has been inside the house for the winter, has lost all it's leaves and is quite dormant right now, but I expect it to take off and grow like mad when spring comes. I will have to find either a huge pot, or plant it somewhere in the yard.

Strong, rapid growth and requires litte attention. Seems bug-resistant which is good since I live in south Texas/

Given it's very small upon receipt, the growth rate is remarkable.

i bought this plant for my mother who LOOVVVES figs. she lives in New Jersey and had always talked about how she wished she had a fig tree. when she received it she said "i got the little fig plant". PLANT? i thought great- that thing was a waste of money.

she left it in the shed outside over the winter (she said it was to keep it from frost but, secretly, i think she thought it wouldn't make it) and this summer the plant went NUTS. she kept calling me telling me "i can't believe it, the plant has more figs!!". all and all i think she had 10 or 11 figs this year with this tiny little plant. it's the little plant that could. amazing. she loves it and i can't wait to see what happens next year!

I bought the fig plant in March and placed it in a large pot in early April when the weather began to warm. The plant has grown from 4 inches tall to over 4 feet by the end of August. There are at least 5-10 figs growing on the plant. Will winter indoors in the pot after it goes into dormancy. I also live in the Twin Cities (Minnesota) and it is so cool to have a plant like this that is producing fruit. Will try to remember to report next year about this time to see how it fared after overwintering.

I am just going to post my letter to Hirt's as my review:

Greetings:

In the beginning of February I purchased a Chicago Hardy fig tree from you through Amazon. Before I go on, you should know that I live in Montana. I planned on keeping the fig in a pot. In February it was about 10 degrees with 3 feet of snow. Furthermore I was born and raised in Montana and I have never seen a fig tree here, either outside or indoors. I am also a forest pathologist/entomologist for the USDA Forest Service.

So back to my story. I received the plant in February. I took it out of the box and planted it in new soil in a new pot. It had two little leaves on it which I noticed looked funny but I assumed that it was because they were remnants from last year. When two new leaves emerged I noticed something was definitely off and started my research. It didn't take me long to find out my fig had leaf mosaic. I took a leaf into the lab and looked for mites, there were no mites, which means it contracted the virus from the mother plant or the mites had died off. I took pictures of the leaves and contacted Hirt's customer support. The gal told me that my plant has mites and I should discard it. I explained the situation to her (living in Montana, dead of winter, original leaves were infected etc.) and she did give my money back, but she also rather curtly informed me that the fig left Hirt's without the virus. I can assure you that it not true. It is not possible that the tree got this virus in February in Montana. In addition the original leaves were infected.

As I said I did receive my money back, but the truth is you are shipping out figs across the country with an incurable virus that can greatly reduce the production and growth of the plant.
