The unhappy couple have known each other since childhood ,so I can't understand why they are not more honest with each other.
. The only reason I can think of is that it would dispose of the plot completely.
Incidentally, lavender would have been totally inappropriate colour for a wedding ball. It was such a dingy colour it was used for half- mourning. Mauve dye did not exist. Her husband could have at least given her some pretty jewels!
Why in American novels do people "pass" ? In Georgian England they simply die!
