Curtis was a good, intelligent man but he needed a no-nonsense woman like Emma in control of his business affairs. The I thoroughly enjoyed His Competent Woman. I loved the fact Emma used her intelligence and competence to win over Curtis instead of sex appeal. Not that she wasn't attractive. She just had more important things to worry about than being sexy and acting flirtatious. She had her head firmly attached to her shoulders and her priorities in order. That is my idea of a perfect heroine.
Curtis was a good, intelligent man but he needed a no-nonsense woman like Emma in control of his business affairs. The bubble brains who worked for him previously very obviously took advantage of him by not doing their jobs. He was a wonderful, refreshing change of pace for a rich hero. He didn't jump from woman to woman making one conquest after another. Even though he was drop-dead gorgeous. My kind of hero.
I laughed out loud when Emma set Curtis straight on her first day at work! She proved she wasn't a shrinking violet but a force to be reckoned with. When she told off the bimbo later in the story, I cheered. I love it when people like the bimbo what they deserve. I smiled and laughed many times when Emma was having her internal debates. They were priceless!
I highly recommend reading His Competent Woman. I look forward to more books like this from Ellen Whyte.
Some of the struggles Emma goes through with being a single mom hit close to home with me. But the way that Ellen writes this story she hits those struggles on point. Emma does her best to give her son everything he needs even if that means she goes without. When she finds out her son needs a special test done she worries she won't have the money needed for it. But when a job opportunity opens up she rushes to apply.
Now in a job with better pay she can afford to get her son help. But is it worth it when the CEO of said company is a complete jerk? Emma being the strong person she is takes his spoiled and entitled demanding with class.
But after being at the job for a few days she soon realizes the CEO named Curtis that she met the first day is not the real Curtis. Curtis although in a bind the day she applied for the job made it seem like he doesn't like women.
Can Emma move past the fact she fibbed on her credentials of previous work? Will Curtis continue to be a jerk to her? Sparks fly and the inner devil Emma has in her head will have you laughing throughout this story.
A woman in dire need of funds to pay for a specialist for her son's disability, meets a handsome, stern, alpha-male boss who needs someone like her to get his office back on track and in the process, they both discover that opposites DO attract. There was a lot of English humor, phrases, foods etc. that made this one different to read but I enjoyed it very much. It was a much lighter read than what I'm used to and the characters, while being slightly stereotypical, were hilarious and even the "bad" guys were more bark than bite.
A fun, romantic comedy for anyone who wants a fast-paced story with a guaranteed HEA.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
