Based on the Philip Pullman trilogy His Dark Materials, this third installment of the TV Series covers the events of The Amber Spyglass, the third novel in the trilogy. Although faithful to the novel, the TV presentation was necessarily limited by time and did not completely fulfill the majesty of the written work. Even so, the film was suitably adapted, scripted, directed and acted. Starring Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Dafne Keen, in the roles of Mrs. Marisa Coulter, Lord Asriel, Lee Scoresby, and Lyra Belacqua, the presentation engaged and held my interest without comparing the film to the book. It is a wonderfully entertaining series, and this episode was as fascinating as the first and second episodes that preceded it.

The TV Series of His Dark Materials presents a faithful production of the trilogy, and the entire series is thoroughly captivating.

The first episode in the TV Series His Dark Materials aired in 2019 and was a remake of The Golden Compass 2007 film, both based on the events of The Northern Lights, the first novel in the trilogy; the second episode in the TV Series, based on the events of The Subtle Knife, the second novel in the trilogy, aired in 2020; and the third final episode in the TV Series, based on the events of The Amber Spyglass, the third novel in the trilogy, aired in 2022.

As much as I enjoyed the TV Series, I could not help comparing the first episode of the TV version of His Dark Materials to The Golden Compass 2007 film version, starring Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliot, Dakota Blue Richards, in the roles of Mrs. Marisa Coulter, Lord Asriel, Lee Scoresby, and Lyra Belacqua, inasmuch as both the TV and film versions were based on The Northern Lights first volume in the trilogy; and I found myself wishing that the fuller and more faithfully scripted TV version had had the same producers, actors and direction presented in the film version. In my subjective opinion, the TV series regardless of its acknowledged excellence even so lacked the enchanting magic conveyed by the production and actors presented in the film version, in spite of the film being unfaithful to the novel.

After watching the first two series I finally read the three books in anticipation of the third series. (Insert all the regrets of not having read the books years ago so I could have already reread them dozens of times). All through The Amber Spyglass I had visions of the events that were unfolding, imagining how everything would look. I was stunned by the excellent adaptation, completely blown away by the interpretation, and so ready now to revisit the entire TV series and books. The differences ("that's not how it happened in the book") were forgivable and did not detract from the original story. I haven't enjoyed such a book-to-film adaptation since Lonesome Dove. Solid 10/10.

Been waiting for this for a while but departs from Pullman’s original. Splendid acting and sfx although I prefer Ian McLellen’s and Sam Elliot’s previous performances on the first video attempt. All told a very good retelling of a massively creative work by Pullman.

The third season of the series felt a bit rushed to me especially compared to the first two seasons. It is a satisfying. Inclusion to the series and remains largely faithful to its source. Fidelity wouldn’t matter if the story wasn’t well told and the writers/directors/producers/actors do a great job of that.

Based on Phil Pullman’s popular YA novels, “His Dark Materials” focuses Lord Asriel’ attempt to built his army for his war on Heaven. Heaven has taken notice. Meanwhile, Lyra and Will have gone in search of her friend Roger who died (in season one) and are trapped in Purgatory. Lyra is determined to release her friend Roger. Mary goes in search of Lyra crossing the barriers between worlds.

The series really deserves a 4 K release but this blu-ray looks pretty good. Detail is sharp with nice depth and colors pop. The handsome production design is a highlight and it looks beautifully rendered here. Likewise, the CGI looks top notch as well.

Sadly, this set, unlike seasons one and two, comes without a special features. That’s unfortunate.

The final season of the series is top notch if a bit rushed at the conclusion and it’s a fine final season for the show.

His Dark Materials starts off at about the same point that The Golden Compass does with a little more characterization of the main protagonist, Lyra. The movie was apparently meant to have sequels that continue the story, but the film didn't make much money, and the story was scrapped. His Dark Materials takes three seasons to tell the complete story that The Golden Compass couldn't. There are different actors in the series, but their performances are excellent, and the production quality is just as good. You really don't need to see the movie before watching the series, since it doesn't continue the story.

Borders between child fantasy and adult themes but does not satisfy either. The ending was a disappointing tragedy and leaves the watcher feeling very unfulfilled after the tribulations of the main characters .

As a fan of the books, grossly let down by 2007's Golden Compass, I found the new series much closer to the books without being slavish about it. The first two seasons were so good I bought them as soon as the DVDs were available, and going on the assumption that the third and final season would continue with the same high quality, I pre-ordered it. It did not disappoint! I laughed, cried and had all the "feels" that the story needed to bring it to a close. I will, no doubt, re-watch the entire series over the years to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars A strange mythology but a fascinating adventure all the same.

This was the third and final season in the His Dark Materials trilogy. The series represents the expanded tale of The Golden Compass movie of 2007. I enjoyed the movie and this series for the excellent storytelling. Though a flight of fancy, with magical witches, and powerful spirit beings, a land of the dead reached by a boatman and guarded by harpies, wormhole-like travel between worlds in a multiverse, dangerous criminals and heroes, sometimes one and the same, and lots of talking animals and daemons and you have the adventure of adventures! Enjoy.
