PHILIP PULLMAN is one of the most acclaimed writers working today. He is best known for the His Dark Materials trilogy (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass), which has been named one of the top 100 novels of all time by Newsweek and one of the all-time greatest novels by Entertainment Weekly. He has also won many distinguished prizes, including the Carnegie Medal for The Golden Compass (and the reader-voted "Carnegie of Carnegies" for the best children's book of the past seventy years); the Whitbread (now Costa) Award for The Amber Spyglass; a Booker Prize long-list nomination (The Amber Spyglass); Parents' Choice Gold Awards (The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass); and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, in honor of his body of work. In 2004, he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

It has recently been announced that The Book of Dust, the much anticipated new book from Mr. Pullman, also set in the world of His Dark Materials, will be published as a major work in three parts, with the first part to arrive in October 2017.

My friend let me borrow The Golden Compass but didn't have the other two in the trilogy when I was dying to read it. I finally caved and bought the trilogy because I couldn't wait any longer! Unlike some authors who write sequels and 3rd, 4th, or 5th books just because they're trying to ride out their fame with their first novel, Pullman definitely delivers with all three of the books. They are all beautifully written and incredibly engaging, for both children and adults. At first I felt embarrassed to read a children's novel, but after a chapter or so, I quickly discovered that the book had universal appeal. Pullman has such a wonderful imagination and manages to surprise you all the time throughout the three novels. The characters were infuriating at times, but I quickly reminded myself that he was writing about pre-teens so that explained the juvenile personalities who sometimes acted like mature adults. The trilogy was about loss, friendship, respect, love, betrayal, faith, etc.

Many critics of this book argue that it's deeply anti-Christian. I disagree. I think the book was simply extolling the importance of independent thinking. It was a story plot that taught that we are capable of good even without being religious, and that destinies don't exist because we can make our own futures. It was an uplifting, imaginative story. For children, the story on the surface will be fun enough. For adults, it's definitely interesting to be able to read between the lines and see a deeper meaning to the story than what one might read into it at first.

It is the most recent UK edition bound together in paperback with a beautiful cover of a leopard as shown on Scholastic's UK site & now in the customer images of Amazon's site listing. It can take time to get, as many places have it backordered, but it is well worth the wait.

If you even slightly enjoyed the movie, you'll love reading the series!

That prompted me to buy the original books, especially since the second and third books were not going to be made into movies. I certainly wasn't disappointed! As I said in the title, I had a hard time putting it down even though the three novels in this omnibus edition were over 1000 pages long.

Will Parry, a twelve year old boy tries to keep his mentally unstable mother from two men who come and harass her about information on her husband who traveled to the artic but has disappeared. Will ends up fleeing when he accidentally kills one of the thieves that came. He runs into a door that has him in another world. In this world, He meets Lyra with her daemon in this alternative world. Will finds refuge and Lyra is looking for answers about the Dust. Will she find her answers? Will is willing to help her find the answers. Many of Lycra’s friends are looking for her as they wish to help her. This is just a brief introduction to this book. There is so much more to the story.

This is the second book in the author’s series “His Dark Material.s” I enjoyed reading this graphic novel with beautifully illustrated pictures perfect for this novel. The action and adventure of Will and Lyra held my attention especially with the twists and turns in the story. It’s a fantastic read!

great except for amber spyglass

Had picked up a paperback from Walmart when the movie was releasing. never touched it beyond the first 100 or so pages .... until last week. every book has an agenda. those who refuse to believe in it are either liars or idiots. the difference in Pullman's is that he has something against a very pervasive concept, namely, the religion of Christianity. The first 2 volumes are really very good. The part about the mulefa or whatever was really stretched beyond imagination. only in the negative sense. i fell asleep every night when I got to that part (i cannot afford more than a couple of hrs everyday) when he was in the mulefa world. the character building for Marisa, Asriel, Metatron etc were in my opinion very weak (even if this was intentional, I don't see the point of it). In comparison, even the gyptian characters were better. Gomez was a joke. That event with the tualapa or whatever and his night visit are a waste of the reader's time. Mary Malone, apart from doing the 'tempting' very well, didn't do much and i am angry that I have wasted so much time in that world that I cannot get back. Still, 4 stars because the first 2 volumes are excellent.

フランスで最初に3分冊で出版されました。これはそれを1つにまとめ、英語訳したものです。
コミックですから、気楽に読めると思います。ふつうのコミックよりはテキスト量が多めで、それが「グラフィック・ノベル絵付き小説」と呼んでいる理由でしょうか。
原作の雰囲気は十分味わえます、愉しいです。BBCがすでにTVドラマシリーズでシーズン2「神秘の短剣」を放映しており、それがBlu-rayになっています。それと比較してみると興味津々です。やはりメディアの違いから、描写が全然変わってきています。全体としての印象ですが、少し後半紙数が足りなくなった感があります。予定が変わったのでしょうか、あるいは前半中盤で盛り上がりすぎたのか。いずれにせよ、ラストは相当忙しくなり、深い感興に欠けるきらいがあります。リー・スコーズビーの英雄的なラストもあっさりしています。これでも前作コミック版の「黄金の羅針盤」の224ページに比べると、272ページとだいぶ増えているのですが。

I'll not rehash over the story, it's fantastic and I strongly recommend any one who likes young adult fantasy books to leap on this. I can guarantee you won't be bored, and it's not one of those books we all know too well that is basically someone else's story retold. I first read this in those blurry days after Harry Potter when I was trying to find another series of young adult/magic books to get into. Whilst the 2 books are nothing similar, I still am glad I read this in the aftermath.

That aside, what I am writing this review for is to communicate how large this edition of the book is. I brought this for a friend for her birthday, and it heralded its arrival with a booming at the door and a postman bundling this large box into my arms. Opening it, I discovered a book of epic proportions, the cat's face on the front is practically life-sized! It wouldn't have put me off buying it per say, but it's a hell of book. If like me, you enjoy reading out and about then this is not the edition for you. Yet on the other hand, it does make me feel like the pagemaster pursing through this tome.... Decisions, decisions!

When I reached the end of this trilogy I almost grieved at the thought it had finished. I feel like no other book will ever grip me and draw me into another world as this one has.

I found the books exciting, moving and enthralling. The descriptions of all the other worlds make me feel as if I am actually there. I love the strength of the characters, the richness of the plot and the way it leaves me thinking over every part of the story for hours afterwards.

I initially borrowed the books individually from a friend. By the time I had reached the end of the second book I knew I would want to re-read them over and over again, which is why I chose this specific product as I wanted them all in one book so that I could carry it with me easily on my travels.

Best book I've ever read. I reached the end of it longing for a deamon of my own!

This places pre conceived ideas about characters into your mind. A shame because it is a great read, even if you are NOT a teenager.

I dare you not to love Polar bears even more having read this book!
