… forgot the book ended with the beginning, Ama did in fact burn the cabin down. There are preternatural forces at work here … Laura saw Nathan’s Dad dying and figured out Nathan killed him … Ama saw Laura dying and Laura spoke to Ama from the beyond and told her to “save herself” and “burn down the cabin”. Ama was intuitive enough to keep what she knew/believed from Nathan and spiked his coffee with sleeping pills. Ama “may” have stopped a potential serial killer but it’s still murder. That’s the unfinished part of this short story I’m missing. Overall a good story though.

His Happy Place by Zakiya Dalila Harris is book two in a series of novellas call The Getaway Collection. Like the other entries, this story takes place in a vacation setting. This book's genre is supernatural/horror. Ama and her new boyfriend, Nathan, head out for a weekend away at Nathan's cabin. Time away from the city and focusing on the or relationship sounds great, until Ama starts having nightmares that seem too real. Many parts of the story are sufficiently scary. I got chills. The flow is choppy, however, and the reader struggles to make the leaps that the characters do to move the plot along. It feels like Harris had a good story to tell, but had to cram it into a certain number of pages, and took out key connections to do it.

This story was written so haphazardly. I am still not sure what the plot of the story was. It started out with Ama burning down the cabin and ended with an hallucination telling Ama to burn it down. The Author tried to give a backstory that was all over the place and the main story was even more confusing. Was Ama's boyfriend a killer or not? Was Ama mentally unstable? I guess we'll never know & that's what's bothering me
