In this book Daniel's big Alpha friend Jason is caught in a paradoxical situation. He was born and raised on the wrong side of the tracks. No positive influences - because most of the people he knew, crime was a way of life. A life he got caught up in. The police were not rescuers, they were the enemy; willing to frame a man if need be.
Yet in their run down crime & drug infested neighborhood Jason's angelic side prevailed. He saw a young Omega struggling just like him to survive and Jason became his protector. But their personalities were so contradictory while Daniel was full of dreams & optimism, conversely Jason's vision of life was more realistic, especially since he was an ex-con. He was pessimistic and felt no matter how hard he tried, he was always going to have doors of opportunity shut in his face.
Just a head's up - this story contains some bdsm. While it's not the focus of the book it's still integral to the plot.
On the other hand, Hank the "first" Omega police officer hired by the Portville department had a good, but lonely life. His friendly nature, confidence, and proven law enforcement track record garnered him the respect of most of his colleagues. There were some though who did not believe Omegas should be on the force. Hank & his partner scoffed at this until one particular arrest. He couldn't keep his attraction to the suspect of a major crime under control. He felt thrown off his game and out of sorts.
Both main characters were in disbelief of the mutual attraction they experienced. Jason hated the police and Hank couldn't imagine consorting with a known felon, but Daniel vouched for Jason and while this didn't satisfy everyone it did give the arresting officers another side. One not just laid out on his rap sheet & because of his family / associates.
I was surprised by who made the first move. This was a budding relationship that was difficult for both men. Each with so much to lose, but was love worth the price they'd both have to pay? Fear, danger, pride, a little kink, and a career threatening choice. But having a baby for an Omega who dreamed of doing so was not a hard choice at all. Now if only the same could be said for the other Father.
You get to see the guys grow together as the relationship evolves, and the challanges they face are very true to life. Challanges that everyone faces as they navigate a relationship and learn about each other.
The story builds on the previous ones, so while you don't necessarily have to have read the others first, it does help with some background of the story. I also enjoy the fact that the next book is always set up at the end of the current one. I can't wait to see what book 4 brings...
Hank was willing and able to be honest and his strength enabled Jason to show the person he truly was. What a fun romance and love story.
It was great to see other couples from earlier in the series and to see how they are doing. I am so enjoying this series.
