As a mother, I was drawn to the description of this story. I was looking forward to reading a story that exemplifies the strength of a mother's love and indomitable will to seek a better life for her child. Amazingly, this story was that and so much more! HIS HOMETOWN GIRL is a story about the importance and meaning of home, community and family. Above all, HIS HOMETOWN GIRL exemplifies that love can heal all.

Jodi Chapman, the single mother of Tyler (a four-year old autistic boy), is determined to find a way to pay for a private school to help her son. She finds that opportunity when she is promised a promotion and bonus by her employer, a Chicago-based industrial farm conglomerate, if she can convince her former hometown neighbors to sell their farms to her employer. Jodi heads back to her Vermont hometown to complete her mission.

What she doesn't count on is Daniel Gleason, her former boyfriend and childhood rival, who rallies an opposite campaign to preserve the farming community through an organic co-op. Ten years ago, following a series of unfortunate events, Jodi had ran away from Daniel and her hometown, and had never previously looked back. Her return forces her to confront her feelings for Daniel and her hometown. But how does Tyler fit in, and can she afford to think about her happiness when Tyler is her top priority?

One of the hallmarks of an exceptionally talented writer is the ability to transport the reader to a previously unknown time or place. Ms. Rock is clearly such a gifted writer! While reading HIS HOMETOWN GIRL, I felt like I was sent on a vacation to a small farming town. No small feat for a lifelong city girl like myself! Moreover, not only did Ms.

Y'all, I SO fell in love with Daniel! He is such a fantastic man! Of course, I fell in love with ALL the characters in this book. :) Little Tyler is so adorable, you can't help but love him. But if someone could wave a magic wand, and make Daniel come to life, I would be ALL over that!

Although it's hard to imagine the life of a single mother with an autistic child, I sometimes wanted to shake Jodi and be like, "CALM DOWN. Tyler is wonderful just the way he is." But of course, raising Tyler is not her only responsibility. Jodi has a high-stress job...especially when she has to go back to her hometown and try to convince the locals to sell their family farms. Really though, Jodi is a wonderful mother, even if she can't see that herself.

Daniel and Jodi may bring out the worst in each other sometimes...but they also bring out the best in each other. :)

And did I mention the secondary characters?! Talk about some fantastic men and women from good old Cedar Bay! They all help to shape Jodi and Daniel's story. But those people from Chicago (Jodi's ex in particular) I SERIOUSLY wanted to strangle! I'm not gonna lie. I grew up in a small town, and there's nothing like that feeling of community that comes from everybody knowing everybody, and many times, big city folks just don't understand it.

I had a few status updates while reading this one:

"This book seriously needs to be a movie! I can just picture everything so vividly!"

"I REALLY need to get to sleep. But I just. Can't. Stop. Reading!"

I definitely cried, even more than just that first time at 5% in!

Is it love or war? Definitely war for Jodi and Daniel, then you throw in an autistic child in the mix and what do you have? A truly wonderful read! You have lost love, broken hearts, an ex, love, and so much more. Jodi and Daniel are not only at war with each other but with themselves and their feelings.

The ONE that got away, each of us has that someone. What would we do if we got a second chance to get that one person back? Who hasn't wanted a chance to go back and redo a part in your life, have a second chance? Jodi and Daniel get this second chance, but will they take it or lose it? So many things are in their way, along with a past that they might not be able to get past.

Jodi is fighting so hard to do what is right for her child, to find money to get him the help he needs. To do this she must go home and face all that she left behind, get local farmers to sell her company their farms. She must face the man she left and her own fears, wants and desires.

Daniel doesn't want to lose his hometown, he was to keep the farms going and he thinks he has away to do this. With Jodi coming home he has his own fears to fight, the girl who broke his heart and walked away without a word. Can he keep the farmers from selling and at the same time keep his heart from being broken. Can he let Jodi walk in his life and let her walk away?

This book touches on so many issues of life today, along with Autism, Parkinson. How many of us look at kids that play out in public and think why doesn't that mother do something with that child? I know I am guilty. This book has given me a lesson and reminded me all things are not as they seem, to take a closer look before judging.
