About the Author

Maggie James is a British author who lives in Bristol. She writes psychological suspense novels.

Before turning her hand to writing, Maggie worked mainly as an accountant, with a diversion into practising as a nutritional therapist. Diet and health remain high on her list of interests, along with travel. Accountancy does not, but then it never did. The urge to pack a bag and go off travelling is always lurking in the background! When not writing, going to the gym, practising yoga or travelling, Maggie can be found seeking new four-legged friends to pet; animals are a lifelong love!

Some people suffer the worst luck life can dish out, and many survivors manage to function, while others fall into despair, depression and dysfunction.

If your baby dies, does your hard-luck story justify stealing someone else's baby and passing it off as your own?

If your stepdad is a jerk, does that justify becoming a sexaholic who uses women (men, too) in an endless, unsatisfying series of one-night stands or temporary relationships?

The interior monologues of this novel made me squirm. I had no desire to spend time in the company of these bitter, angry people who hurt others in their attempts to alleviate their own pain. The ending didn't ring true for me. Then again, given the mental instability of the characters, it may have made perfect sense.

Maybe I missed something that all the 5-star reviewers found to appreciate about this story, but I just couldn't like this one. It might be brilliant. It might be a keen, insightful glimpse into the scarred psyches of people who've been abused. I just can't go there.

Sure, bad things happen in life, but so many truly dreadful things happening to one person tests the suspension of disbelief. Then to add to the misery more characters are introduced who have suffered horrendous pain, and the plot seemed more and more contrived. At 70% I'd had enough misery so I speed read through to the end, by which time I felt battered and bruised by the constant hammering of the theme of not judging others until you've walked in their shoes. A lighter touch would have been more effective.

This was my first experience with the author so I wasn't quite sure what to expect but I was very pleasantly surprised.

The book throws you right into the action and you're left gasping at the end of the very first chapter.

The author does a brilliant job of bringing you inside Laura's mind and her thoughts throughout the entire book. You know she's completely crazy but you're fascinated to find out why, just like Daniel. That need to find out the why had me flipping the pages as fast as I could read them.

The intricately woven story was skillfully written and gave you just enough breadcrumbs along the way to keep you invested in both Laura and Daniel's stories without giving away too much too fast. This consistent level of tension made the story incredibly enjoyable to read as it just flew along.

Thriller lovers are sure to enjoy this truly fascinating look into a completely bizarre situation. It was a genuine pleasure to read and I am eagerly awaiting the author's next release!

I had to go back and check that the author had been an accountant and not a mental health professional. This work is an insight into the workings of the mind of a delusional woman, and an exploration of the consequences and the impact of her actions on the young man she kidnapped when he was a small boy. It also contains a message of compassion and understanding mixed in with all the anger. I couldn't put it down.

The author, Maggie James, writes with a persuasive pen that will pull you deep into His Kidnapper’s Shoes. This was my first time reading Ms. James; just happened to stumble across her work and lucky for me. From the first page, the author thrusts the reader into the story. But Ms. James gives the reader a few pages with a slow simmer and there’s a good reason. As a reader you’ll need a little time to fasten your seatbelt before the rollercoaster ride of HKS takes off at full speed. Maggie James is masterful with her word choice and carefully structured descriptions of the drama unfolding page after page. Her ability to use words to uncover and paint for the reader a landscape of psychological intrigue is rare. The challenge of untangling the various characters’ feelings and motivations, contrasted with their hopes and fears, is handled with ease by Ms. James. Even sensitive and highly emotional issues that surface in HKS are presented with perfect balance. HKS is a complete, stand-alone novel. But Ms. James does something that is often not done in novels; she leaves room at the end of her novel, HKS, for the reader to ponder and wonder about some of the characters as their future might unfold. As a reader, I like that. His Kidnapper’s Shoes was a delight to read and a psychological suspense-thriller that will cling to your memory. This is definitely a 5-star novel!

I loved the story line but was so disappointed and surprised at the amount of vulgarity it contained. It was such a good story and the characters were described well but the use of the bad language ruined it for me. I don't understand why it was needed. For that reason, I will not be reading any more books from this author. Such a shame. I would have given it 5 stars for the story which depicted so many real life experiences, but could not do so because there may be other christian people who would download this book with the same idea I had.

This story is about Laura and Daniel’s relationship. Laura raised Daniel, and the book alternates between Laura’s thoughts about the past and Daniel’s reactions in the present. Laura refuses to speak throughout the book, and the reasons are explored throughout.

There were early parts of the book where I wondered whether I liked Laura or Daniel. They both seemed to use people to please themselves, with no consideration of how their actions would affect those around them. As the story developed, and the histories of both characters emerged, I could understand why they were both acting the way they were.

Laura and Daniel have to understand different things. Laura has to understand why Daniel reacts the way he does to the situation. Daniel has to understand why Laura did what she did and the reasons behind her actions. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, empathy and forgiveness all play major parts in this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent book and particularly liked how the chapters moved back and forth from Laura to Daniel. There is some strong language and several sex scenes throughout, but considering the events that unfold I didn’t find it over the top. A thought provoking story that is extremely well written.
