"His Kind of Cowgirl is an emotional read that is well worth your time." - Romantic Times
"Oh, the mistakes.  The misunderstandings.  The secrets and the pride.  All of those things add to the sizzle moments, the growing bonds and the truth to make the end product so, so sweet.  This was a fantastic clean romance.  Love! " - Aimee Brown, Getting Your Read On

From the Author

I loved penning this second chance, secret child love story set on a Texas prize bull ranch. Research is one of my favorite parts of writing stories. I was very lucky to connect with PBR agent, Sheri Smith, who represents Mike Lee, an elite bull-riding champion on whom I based my hero, Tanner. In addition to her busy work schedule, Sheri, a Navy veteran, works tirelessly to support all military, EMS, firefighters, law enforcement and other professionals that protect and serve our country through her incredible organization, which I support, WARRIORS AND RODEO. It provides rodeo gear, via donations and sponsorship, to war veterans interested in the rodeo/western lifestyle. Whether it be vests, helmets, chaps, boots, spurs, hats, ropes, clothing or other items - WAR gives back to those who are willing to give it all. I hope you'll check out this very worthy cause at

Ten years ago, Claire Shelton gave Tanner Hayes an ultimatum... her or the rodeo. She was heartbroken when he chose the rodeo. But Tanner knew he needed to make something of himself and prove their small town wrong if he was ever going to be worthy of Claire. Little did he know the heartaches and hard decisions that would come from that one choice.

Fast forward to present day and Claire's life is far from easy. She's a widow, a single mother, a caregiver for her father who recently had a stroke and is dealing with her father's ranch that is about to be foreclosed on. She does not expect Tanner to come crashing back into her life... literally.

And now with her deepest, darkest secret on the verge of being discovered, she would give anything for Tanner to disappear again. Little did she know that fate had something else in store for these two. Sit back and hold on tight as Claire and Tanner embark on a journey filled with adventure, family, self discovery, forgiveness and most importantly love.

Tanner was such an amazing hero! He had a tough life growing up but was determined to be a better person than either of his parents were. I loved the way he interacted with little Jonathan. He was so good with him and for him. I loved watching these two develop their relationship. Any scene with the two of them had me grinning from ear to ear. Absolutely adored them! :)

Sadly, I had a hard time connecting with Claire. I have to admit I spent a lot of the book disliking her. I get that she was trying to protect everyone around her because of her fears but I think she went about it the wrong way. She was doing more harm to others than good to herself. I wish that her secret would've come out a bit sooner than it did.

Claire Shelton and Tanner Hayes were young and in love. Unfortunately, when we are young, sometimes we don’t always make the best choices. When Claire made Tanner choose between her and the rodeo, she never expected that he would choose the rodeo. At that point, neither really understood the other’s point of view.

Now, Tanner has come back home to, at the request of Claire’s father, help out at the ranch while he recuperates. Claire is now a widow and single mother, one with a secret that she has held ever since Tanner left her. With the risk of her secret being found out growing every day, Claire tries to find ways to get Tanner to leave.

Tanner, too, has matured a lot in his time away and is determined to make things right with Claire and hopefully earn a second chance for them to find a future together. When the secret comes to light, Tanner ends up responding beautifully. I think that he is my favorite hero of any Karen Rock book that I have read.

This book had great, developed characters with a storyline that will keep you turning the pages. This book is an easy recommendation for me.

Any novel by Karen Rock is a winner. Her writing style is artful, witty, compassionate and has that elusive ability to draw the reader in and make us believe we are the heroine. In His Kind of Cowgirl, not only did Karen Rock precisely create the Texas world of bull riding and raising, the concerns of Claire and her father, their ranch and the saving of their livelihood are not plot points in a book, but are real-life struggles.
The relationships between Tanner and Claire was just as real. Tanner was Claire's first love and the father of her son (adorably portrayed, by the way). But Tanner doesn't know this. When they were young and in love, Tanner left town to join the Rodeo and Claire discovered she was pregnant. She married Kevin who raised the baby as his own. When Kevin is killed overseas, Claire is devastated. Shortly, thereafter, Tanner returns to town and runs into Claire. Literally. He collides with Kevin's truck as Claire runs a red light.
All these years, Claire has been over-protective of her son but now he's growing up. She's lied to her son, her father and Tanner and told them that
Kevin was the boy's father. She knows the truth must come out, and if it does it will destroy the blossoming love she's finding in Tanner.
I highly recommend this novel. It's not the typical cowboy story, but is achingly, joyously real.

“His Kind of Cowgirl” by Karen Rock starts with a tear-jerker of a prologue that grabbed my emotions and entangled me in the lives of Claire and her adorable son as they learn to deal with multiple challenges. Then I struggled to form a connection to Tanner after that impactful opening and learning of the past history between them and unresolved issues that made Claire’s distrust understandable but frustrating. Things piled on until I was almost suffocating under the burdens that all of them were struggling with and frustrated at the lack of transparency and reluctance to be honest with each other. I am impressed that the author was able to create such realistic characters and invest me in their lives so much that I found myself fussing at them, but I was relieved that things eventually work out, even if it wasn't quite as smoothly as I would have liked. This was an intriguing perspective on the challenges of a condition such as ADHD and its impact on lives and the importance of finding a way to cope. Kudos to the author for sharing both her story and Tanner and Jonathan’s challenges.

This contemporary romance with a western twist follows Claire Shelton as she meets and overcomes the blows that life hands her, including widowhood, a father incapacitated by a stroke, and the threat of losing the family ranch. Having bullrider Tanner Hayes forced back into her life adds to her stress, and the secrets swirling around them only complicate matters even further. Tanner is destined to walk out Claire’s life again, but this time she refuses to let it destroy her and her family. The problem is that her goals may be worlds apart from what Tanner is determined to achieve.
