"The characters alone turn this into a memorable read, and when you add in the holiday spirit, readers will find themselves enchanted." – Reviewed in RT
From the Author
But, as so often happens, I also fell in love with my new characters and my sequel rapidly became their story first. Connie's brother Hal is a notorious rake with no desire to settle down. Lizzie has been badly let down by a man and never wants another one. However, both feel their life is missing something- which obviously is each other but they were both very troublesome in getting them to realise it.
At times, although they instantly became the very best of friends, the pair of them were so stubbornly resistant to a romance I found myself shouting at my keyboard. Fortunately, the story takes place over Christmas. Which means there is always mistletoe...

makes a rash wager for Hal to steal five kisses from Lady Elizabeth Wilding, a woman known to spurn other men's
The story is set at Christmas, along with holiday fun and lots of parties for the ton. Hal has no interest in settling down, and he has a reputation to prove it. But when Lizzie is caught up in a dare unbeknownst to her, things get interesting fast! Throw in some gossip and rambunctious children along with parties and disreputable characters and my interest was engaged from the first page to the last. There is romance and love in abundance that shines through even when those involved aren’t aware of what they are feeling.
Hal and Lizzie continually butt heads for good reason. Her father has protected her all her adult life due to a deathbed promise he made to his wife. Is it worth the toll it’s taking on Lizzie and Lizzie’s closely guarded secret?
I loved the character of Stevens, Lizzie’s bodyguard, and his interactions with Hal. The characters are multidimensional, and we get to know them a little at a time. The story flows nicely with several story lines that were tied up in the end. There is nice closure with an unexpected twist and a happily-ever-after. The cover is true to the story and the picture in my mind of Hal and Lizzie.
Heath has fast become one of my favorite authors. I jumped at the chance to read and review this book when it was offered. I look forward to reading many more of her historical romances. Give her books a try if you haven’t already. You won’t be disappointed.
Hal Stuart, Earl of Redbridge, enjoys being a bachelor, but lately feels like he's missing something. His sister, Connie, [Her Enemy at the Altar] is happily married to Aaron Wincanton and they have 2 daughters. Hal and Aaron love to bet on things and the loser has to muck out the winner's stable. While at a Christmas party Aaron challenges Hal to steal 5 kisses by Twelfth Night from a woman Aaron chooses. Aaron's choice is Lady Elizabeth Wilding.
Lady Elizabeth, aka Lizzie, was left at the altar 5 years ago by a man she believed loved her. She loved him and they anticipated their vows, resulting in her son, Georgie. She loves Georgie very much but he's mostly housebound to prevent ton gossip. Her plan is to move to a cottage away from London, change her last name and raise her son. Her father keeps introducing her to men, but she doesn't believe they would accept her son. She plans to tell her father, who loves his grandson, that she is moving after the holidays.
Hal talks her into pretending, for the holiday season, they like each other to avoid the women chasing him and the men her father introduces her to. The time spent together has him thinking of marriage but she is still planning on leaving London and society after Twelfth Night. Hal meets Georgie and his reaction is not what she expected. The rest of the story you must read as several things, not all good, occur before the HEA. I don't like to write spoilers.
I can easily recommend this standalone book. Characters from his sister's story do appear but you do not have to read that book to follow this one.
