His to Protect is listed as book 2.5 in Carly Phillips’ Bodyguard Bad Boys series and falls in the same timeline as the sixteenth book in Lexi Blake’s Masters and Mercenaries series. This book can be read as a complete standalone. His to Protect is written in third-person semi-omniscient perspective, alternatively following Talia and Shane’s thoughts.
I freaking loved Talia and Shane. They were both so strong, so independent, so confident in who they were. Having two characters who are completely comfortable in their own skin and lot in life seems rare in the world of romance and having two characters like that find one another made me giddy. I loved that they wanted the same things in life and were both completely honest with the fact they weren’t in a place where they thought a relationship was important or feasible.
Though this book was a novella, it didn’t feel rushed or lacking in any way. The plot moved quickly and, while the action was intense, I felt like plenty of time was spent on building the connection between Talia and Shane. In a novella that can be a hard balance to find and Ms. Phillips did an amazing job of striking it.
This is my first time reading Carly Phillips, and if this is indicative of her normal writing, I’m a huge fan. Her prose was engaging and exact. I loved that she didn’t include a bunch of superfluous information for the sake of filling pages. I was wholly impressed with every part of this book, from characterization to plot to style, and look forward to reading more of Ms. Phillips’ work.
Brainy, scientist Talia Shaw has been working on a cure for a heart defect when her lab is broken into. With her life in danger she ends up in the protection of the one man shes always had a crush on, Shane Landon. Shane works for McKay-Taggart a well respected firm in the security field. Talia does her best to set her growing feelings aside for Shane, he's there to protect her not fall in love, but his close proximity makes it very difficult.
Shane always found Talia attractive, but she ran scared from him years before. Now she's back and it's his job to protect her. Setting his feelings aside his job always comes first, it's the very reason why his first marriage didn't work out. However, the more time he spends with Talia he gets the feeling she understands the importance of a job well done since that is the very reason why she is running for her life.
True happiness can be found if you just give someone a second chance and don't judge a book by its cover. These two are the definition of what that means.

The characters were mediocre.
And her version of Ian needs work.
But overall the book and story were okay.
