The driving themes in “His Royal Favorite” are love and sacrifice. In the first book, journalist Ben Dahan finds himself falling in love with the closeted Prince of Wales, who becomes the Prince Regent when his grandfather suffers a stroke. That narrative is about the independent loner, who realizes, much to his surprise, that monogamy makes sense when you fall deeply in love. The second book carries all of the questions and anxieties of the first volume to a remarkably powerful conclusion. What would happen if the heir to the British throne not only came out publicly, but did so with his lover standing by his side?
The paradox of “His Royal Favorite” is that while Prince James finds freedom when he comes out, Ben finds himself suddenly trapped in a world that threatens the freedom that has defined him up until now. As the story unfolds, we are pulled deep into both James and Ben’s hearts, as they struggle to find out if their love is strong enough to withstand the realities of being out and the heir to the last of an empire. Neither man has ever had a healthy long-term relationship, but both of them are complex, multi-faceted personalities. James has sacrificed anything approaching a normal life out of duty to the monarchy; Ben has sacrificed just as much to achieve the kind of emotional and intellectual independence he craves.
The actual situation in Great Britain today is skillfully woven into the plot, because it is recognizable contemporary history that fuels the book, not just conjecture and romantic flummery. Pace has created a fairly breathtaking piece of speculative history and made it both thoughtful and very moving.
Lilah Pace must be a very famous writer in real life, if she’s willing to hide her real name so fully on books that would make me very proud to have written. I’m guessing also that she’s straight, not that either of these are unusual in the world of gay romantic fiction, but I know how little respect anything gay or romantic gets in the mainstream publishing world. But I cannot believe that her New York Times best-selling books are any better or give more pleasure than “His Royal Favorite” or its predecessor, “His Royal Secret.”
He’s placed all of his trust in the people of England and that they will understand why it is so important that they know the whole truth.
If only it were really that simple.
Ben Dahan has been thrust into the eye of a storm that he never saw coming. He thought he understood exactly what kind of scrutiny he would be placed under as the partner to the Prince of Wales. He couldn’t have been more wrong.
Everyone in the world now wants a piece of him and betrayal lurks around every corner. The freedom that he desperately craved for himself and James is turning out to be nothing more than a gilded cage in disguise.
So when he thinks about everything that he stands to lose – his job, his independence and his anonymity – will he really be able to walk away from it all for the sake of true love?
His Royal Favorite is yet another contemporary masterwork by Lilah Pace! She continues to explore both the fragile and enduring nature of love while her characters struggle with extraordinary circumstances.
She’s fashioned an intimate look at what it means to live and love without regret, without shame and without compromise. And in the end, she renews your hope in the possibility of genuine acceptance and positive change in the world. Truly a Slanket for the soul…
The supporting characters are as real and well developed as the main, with complete personalities and full lives of their own.
This 2 book series were first books I've read by this author, but I'm going to seek out others immediately. I loved every second.
