This was actually a really well written story which had me laughing out loud and has me very much looking forward to Lou (who was too funny) and Callum's full-length novel next. It was also fast paced, with decently developed and likable characters. Though a bit light on the suspense, there were a couple of twists along the way. The romance was very touching as well as passionate, and overall I just had a lot of fun reading it. The ending did leave one question unanswered, which I'm assuming will be resolved in a later installment of the series. All in all I'd say Ms. Ruggle is definitely an author to watch out for, so I'd definitely recommend getting this book while its free if you can =)
>I am an independent reviewer. This is a prequel novella to start the Search & Rescue series and introduces some of the search and rescue team as they prepare to do a demonstration to a group of school children until the demonstration turns real.
>The book tells stories using a lot of really fast and funny banter causing the reader to laugh out loud. The difference between the banter and the total seriousness as the rescue team gets to work shows a lot of professionalism and camaraderie.
>The head of the search and rescue team, Callum and class clown, Derek are introduced. Also present are Derek’s long lost love, teacher, Artie and a new girl wanting to join S & R, Lou. This book has an HEA for Derek and Artie, while introducing the arson theme that will be present throughout all of the novels in this series.
>This novella is appropriate for an adult audience. The writing in this book is smooth and easy to read, while discussing topics in search and rescue that may not be familiar to most readers. The romance is not a silly insta-romance, but a slow burn that really hits a reader in the feels. I am giving this book 5 stars.
Artemis Rey can't believe that the person demonstrating search and rescue is her old flame, Derek. When Chase falls through the ice and his two classmates disappear, her only solace in the situation is that Derek is trained to help in both situations. But when they get paired together to search for the girls, everything that both Artemis and Derek have kept buried bubbles back to the surface with a vengeance.
Katie Ruggle is a new author for me and the free prequel has me hooked on her Search and Rescue series. On His Watch is an engaging romantic suspense novel. The serious parts of the book - the ice rescue and the search for the girls - isn't overshadowed by the romance. The sparks are evident between Artemis and Derek yet they don't let them interfere (much) with the search for the girls.
The author's writing style is great. I was engaged quickly and the content kept me focused. I plan to continue the series as the storylines are interesting. Katie weaves several themes throughout the story, keeping the book from becoming stale. There isn't so much going on that detracts from anything, either.
The characters were well developed, especially since this is a novella. The world building was good even though there is a spot in the novella regarding a cabin and footprints that wasn't really explored much beyond the initial discovery. I hope that more of that comes to light in one of the next books, otherwise it was just a random filler that was a bit longer than necessary. Otherwise, the novella was great.
My review copy is a verified Amazon purchase.
I had a hard time getting into this story. It starts out very slow with a rescue and two young girls coming up missing. There is some humor, suspense and drama. For me to invest in this story I needed more background and history. It did seem this was written for a younger audience.
Being a new author is tough your first book is your baby, so much a part of you. There are some really good points, the humor is funny, suspense was nice, and the drama was deep. I really wish I could give a higher rating but for me the author just didn’t do it but for many others she did. With the slow start I was lost and just could not be found. The ending has some very interesting things that might carry over into book one. I am going to read it next. I do see great things in this author and with time she could be a very talent author. Please give this a chance and see what you think.
