Madelyn Swann is an actress, one who has a duke as a grandfather, no less. Madelyn has two burning desires and they are to open her own dress shop and to confront her Ducal grandfather for shunning her deceased mother. Her way of attaining these goals is to auction off her virginity and live for a year as a mistress. I thought this plan a bit ridiculous and my opinion of Madelyn was not too high because her plans were not well thought out. I do not know how she would ever find a way to gain entry into a ton ball as a mistress and confront her grandfather. It made no sense and her plan for the shop didn’t seem as if it would work. Why would the merchant class buy the most expensive goods from a woman who seemed to have no background in clothing design. She also has a wicked temper in these opening scenes.
Nathan Atwood, Viscount Rowley, is new to the title and he has recently returned to England having been away for years. He despises his father and to get some revenge he will bid on Madelyn. Nathan knows his whole family will be appalled that he has married a common actress.
Once Madelyn and Nathan wed, I began to like Madelyn more. She shows a softer side to her personality. Her kindness to Nathan’s family is admirable and her loyalty to Nathan is too.
Nathan though becomes demanding and in many ways insensitive. Madelyn is attuned to so many of Nathan’s moods and needs but Nathan rarely reciprocates or he misinterprets Madelyn's. Nathan is so driven to hurt his father that he can’t see the truth around him, that Madelyn is a fine person. Nathan does not get to know Madelyn and this is where the story stumbles. Madelyn is open to discovery about her spouse, Nathan just is not other than the bedroom so it was hard to see him falling in love.
Still Madelyn in the later chapters makes this novel worth reading. She becomes the kind of heroine I like, one who shows kindness, exhibits grace and is honest with herself.
