Paranormal, hasn’t been my thing since Twilight, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It took me a little longer to feel a connection than with my usual romances. Brad and Jayla have a unique relationship which causes the romance to build gradually. I’m used to: insta-romance, then sex. This book is: sex, then romance. Once I was on board with that dynamic, the pacing totally worked for me, and it allowed for an urgency that isn’t prevalent (or believable) in my *usual* books.
The first half sets the stage. Think enemy attraction. Love/hate. Wild lust, sex, uncontrollable urges. HOT. But, like I said, not romantic…yet. I was digging the plot and backstory. I was loving the angsty sex. I was enjoying it. Really enjoying it. 3 stars enjoying it, and if you know me, that’s REALLY good without it being “romantic.” Actually, that’s almost unheard of for me.
But then about half way through, something shifted (pardon the pun). Romance snuck in and before I knew it I was in love with the characters. I rooted for them and I was angry every time they reverted to their stubborn ways. Thus, the angst continued in full force, but the sweet moments, the moments that make me love romance…they were peppered in a little at a time, just when I needed a break from the angst. Just when I needed a *feel*.
As much as I loved the main characters, I honestly think the author could write a book with just the secondary characters and I would love it just as much. Jayla’s pack. (Or just Grandma Maya. Not sure how that would work in erotic romance, but I’m game!) Holy crap, they are so much fun. I absolutely loved every scene they were in – which is funny because normally I’d skim these types of scenes just to get to the juicy stuff. Not here. The interaction between them is pure LOL bliss to read.
And the final scene? Probably one of the best comedic scenes I’ve read in recent memory. I LOVED IT. I laughed so hard, that yes, I did spit my wine. (It’s this thing…)
The second half of the book: 5 stars. Hands down.
Which brings me to my rating, a rounded 4 stars for the whole! Bravo Ms. Nydia. I’m so glad I stepped away from my usual “shelf at the library” and tried something new. I wouldn’t say I’ve converted back to paranormal, but I am a fan of yours! And I’ll happily read all of your shifter-y goodness! And thank you for keeping them in human form…you know…when they…cuz I was a little worried about that…at that one part…
If you are looking for a good book that will make you smile, laugh, shake your head and enjoy the connection between two people that don't like each other, then purchase this book, you will not be disappointed.
Reviewer for Coffee Time Romance & More
At first, I thought Brad was a big jerk, to be honest. During the times Jayla wanted to strangle him, I did too! But he had a significant character arc over the book that endeared me to him the more he came to fall in love with Jayla and come to terms with being on his own, and I loved the dynamic between them. One thing I get annoyed with is when characters don’t change over the course of a story; that was NOT the case here. Brad and Jayla challenge, aggravate, but compliment the hell out of each other, and make each other change in very positive ways. As a result, the love scenes in this are beyond hot and entertaining. Hang on to a paper bag in case you hyperventilate, just a fair warning! I loved the secondary characters, Monica and Grant. They added an extra flavor of fun to it all, and I’d love to see them get their own story at some point.
I can't wait to see what Shannon Nydia has in mind next!
