If, however, you've ever had FUN sitting in a library stack or researching history from primary sources (which is like solving a mystery), or ever traveled to any city or rural area behind the now-gone Iron Curtain, you might also enjoy this book. The characters drag the reader hither and yon around Europe and back and forth in history. If history (or travel) is your thing this is vastly entertaining. If, however, history class always put you to sleep in high school, you might want to pass on this one! Otherwise, 'The Historian" is well-written, fairly well-edited and missing only a bit of character development, which is without doubt the result of its three-pronged plot construction: the reader is following up to three tales--three histories--at any given time, making it difficult to ascertain which character is the "main" character. Is it the recipient of a letter, for example, or its writer? And if the letter happened in the past to a character who appeared in "the present" at the beginning of the book, how does the novelist develop that character any further? These are minor flaws and do little to detract from an interesting and very promising first novel. I hope she writes another.
