Manbeck, who was Brooklyn Borough Historian from 1993 to 2002, divides up his coverage chronologically with chapters entitled 'Brooklyn is America (1852-1899),' 'A New Age (1900-1929),' 'Brooklyn's Glory Days (1930-1949' and 'On the Brink, On the Rise (1950-1982).' The 200 pix, which are printed full-page, were compiled from various sources such as the Library of Congress, Brooklyn Historical Society, Brooklyn Museum, New York State Archives and so on.
While photo quality varies, the impact of those photographs is undeniable. Paging through the book you find compelling images of Coney Island concessions, the Brooklyn Bridge under construction, East River dockyards, ferries, Brooklyn street scenes, brownstones, landmarks like the St. George Hotel and Luna Park, Casey Stengel - then an outfielder - at Ebbets Field, Great Depression breadlines, jitterbuggers, the December 1960 United Airlines crash and other bits of Brooklyn history.
History buffs, especially those with an East Coast bent, should enjoy HISTORIC PHOTOS OF BROOKLYN. It offers a fascinating, time-tripping guided tour through the life and times of this notable city. Recommended.
