Historical Anthology of Music, Vol. 1: Oriental, Medieval, and Renaissance Music Hardcover – January 1, 1949
This great anthology of music literature makes available to all music lovers a wonderful storehouse of hitherto inaccessible treasure. The volume includes the development of Oriental, Medieval, and Renaissance music from the beginning to 1600. Its more than 200 representative examples are individually complete compositions, each of sufficient length to illustrate clearly a form or style. The authors provide an explanatory commentary with bibliography, English translations of foreign texts, and an index. The Library Journal says of it, "in short, Volume 1 of the music historian's classic dreams…No competitors on the market. Highly recommended."

If you're ever taking a class (summer class), and your teacher tells you "just go on Amazon and buy the damn book", the big hint I can give you is: DON'T DO IT THROUGH SBD. I learnt the hard way.
As you suspected, I went on Amazon and searched for this book. The seller SBD showed up with a pretty good deal. I compaired prices and decided to go with SBD: WRONG!!
What happened to me?? well! I bought the book on June 7, foolishing expecting to recevie my book on the "expected arrival" date of 6/14 that SBD posted, and IT NEVER CAME. Then, I got a confirmation email from them, telling me the arrival date of the book will now be 6/28/10.
I originally went with SBD because I thought they offered a fair price, and I was really aiming for the fast shipping. WRONG AGAIN
!
The story is not over yet. The book came SO late, (close to the end of my summer term) that I was forced to buy ANOTHER book from the university book store. (Great, now my expenses doubled.)
I had to email SBD again to let them know I will be returning the book, and they sent me instructions of how to do it.
I was lucky enough that I bought a confirmation along with my package because until yesterday, they claimed that they have NOT received my book, when CLEARLY, the confirmation provided by USPS says the ACTUAL delivery date and time. (and I'm thinking: wow, they must really want to keep my money and the returned book!)
They don't response to their emails unless you force them to do it. They will NEVER give you your money back unless you have EVIDENCE!! So if you're an unfortunate one, keep all your receipts and dates. Trust me, you'll need it.
Until this day, I have NOT received my due refund.
Thanks SBD. I hope you'll realize what you do to others someday, and STOP.
OTHERS, to avoid being totally stressed out about SBD, just don't buy the book from them.
By the way, the book is fine as it is. It's the seller that's bad.
That's all,
Yoma
The examples are quite diverse, and while there are samples of the ancient notation, most of the pieces are provided in modern notation for ease of understanding by students. There is a nice balance of instrumental and vocal music, of sacred and secular music, and of various geographical locals and different times over the centuries.
There is commentary on the pieces in the back along with translations of the texts into English. The book has a nice large format and is wonderfully easy to read.
