"...this book is an important addition to the ongoing reconstruction of the early African history." The Historian

Book Description

This detailed exploration of the African past, from prehistory to about 1870, offers an up-to-date complement to the Cambridge History of Africa. Covering all facets of the continent's history with exceptional erudition, Professor Isichei displays immense learning and an exhaustive command of the literature. The study reflects several emphases in recent scholarship, focussing on 'history seen from below', on changing modes of production, on gender relations and on ecology. A second volume, now in preparation, will cover the period from 1870 to 1995.

"The Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead is a magnificent novel chronicling a young slave's adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. See more

Information is just scattered everywhere. The history of Africa is complex and beautiful; it is a daunting task to attempt to put so much information in 1 book. I feel perhaps instead of making different sections in the book, Isichei may have been better off making multiple books detailing the history of Africa and its regions.
