In this magisterial work the history of the peoples of Palestine from the earliest times to Alexander's conquest is thoroughly sifted and interpreted. All available source material-textural, epigraphic, and archeological-is considered, and the approach taken aims at a dispassionate reconstruction of the major epochs and events by the analysis of social, political, military, and economic phenomena.

The book, chronologically structured, is indispensable for the study of the Hebrew Bible and of the ancient Near East.

Biografía del autor

Gosta W. Ahlstrom, a native of Sweden at the time of his retirement in 1988, held a joint appointment at the University of Chicago Divinity School and at the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. Among his other recent books are Royal Administration and National Religion in Ancient Palestine and Who Were the Israelites?. He died in 1992.

    It is history of Palestine mostly according to Hebrew Bible, with some other added history for the eras that no biblical account is available for. Not surprisingly, it starts with early bronze age, and ends with end of Persian period. There are some archeological references added in foot notes, only if they support the biblical narrative. So if you want to read biblical history of ancient Palestine with geographical and some historical and archeological context added to it, this is the book for you.
    If you are interested in secular, real history of ancient Palestine, look elsewhere.

    The book shows a lifetime worth of research and gives amazing insights and facts regarding ancient Palestine. It is an extensive, complete and detailed account about this small patch of land and is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the region.

    Unfortunately, the book is somewhat awkward and has the feel of a rough draft instead of a finished work. This is mainly noticeable in the author's treatment of biblical stories in relation to the archeological evidence. He presents an overwhelming tide of evidence to show that biblical origin myths such as the Exodus, Judah, Kings David and Solomon never happened. Then in other places he oddly references these stories as if they were actual facts, literally contradicting himself.

    Ahlstrom died while writing the book; it wasn't published until well over a year after his death. So it seems very likely that these problems would have been corrected thru later rewrites and revisions. We will never know, but he can't be faulted for dying in the middle of the process. Read the book for the facts and insights he presents and just accept that there are some contradictions.

    This book covers the entire history and archaeology of Palestine from the Neanderthals to Alexander the Great. This is quite a project, as Gosta Ahlstrom attempts to give a comprehensive account of the archaeology, the contemporary sources, and the problematic relationship of the Biblical text to the history of the period. Ahlstrom died in 1992, just before this book was published in hardback, and I see no evidence of revision, so I think it has to be accepted that any advances in knowledge since then will not be included, but I doubt that these will be significant. For the period after 733 the Archaeology of the Land of the Bible by Ephraim Stern will be slightly more up to date. The book is clearly written, detailed, and gives the different views of how or indeed whether the archaeology, the ancient sources and the Bible agree The book serves as a very helpful book for reference and a detailed account of the history of Canaan and the Jewish people. The books seems to me to be reasonably accessible for the interested reader. It does use a number of acronyms, mainly archaeological ones, but usually explains what these mean as it goes along.
