Editorial Reviews

The History of the Black Church is a rich and powerful story of survival, perseverance, and faith. In our humble efforts, we take only a small glimpse into that rich history - through the eyes of the Pioneers of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, located in Portland, Oregon.

Mt. Olivet was first organized in 1897, when a small group of African Americans were successful in persuading the American Baptist Home Mission Society to grant them a contract of organization. Mt. Olivet has become the Largest Black Baptist Church in the State of Oregon.

Dr. James E. Martin is the senior pastor at Mt. Olivet. Upon Pastor Martin's arrival in November of 1987, and though his "Helps for Life" ministry, the church immediately began to grow following Mt. Olivet's faith based mission to "Win Souls and to Make Disciples."

Join us in this groundbreaking DVD as we examine this part of our unique American History. Hear the word, and explore some of the traditions of the Black Gospel Choirs.

Although it was accurate, it lacked continuity and depth. It left out some valuable facts such as the AME Church and the fact that most Black church's used African in their names. It also had no reference to scholarly work in this area by other African Americans writers. It seemed to be prolog for the Mt. Olivet Church and a serious presentation of th Black church experience.

Great! An excellent addition to your collection if you are interested in black church studies. I recommend this DVD for anyone who is interested in learning more about black church studies. It does a good job and examining the historical information and examining the sociological context of the rising of a black church.

Disappointed. It was not what I expected. At the end it turns into a full blown church service. Title is deceptive.
