This first volume of Latourette's history of Christianity is a good introduction to the topic of Church History. It is a bit dated as it was first published in 1953, but nevertheless it will reward the time taken to read the book. The history covered begins with Jesus himself and the emergence of the early Church within its Judaic and Greco-Roman context and progresses up to the time of the Reformation. Along the way, he devotes some time to the Byzantine Empire, but spends most of his time tracking the progress of the Western Church. He discusses the emergence of monasticism and tracks it as it gives rise to the friars. In addition, he gives a brief overview of the Crusades and some of the factors that to their undertaking. He is careful to note the periods of growth and decline throughout these many centuries as well. Latourette takes a special interest in the spread of Christianity into Asia and every so often he provides a quick update on Christianity's ever so gradual spread into the Orient. Latourette discusses all these and many more and for those interested in further study, he includes a good bibliography at the end of each chapter.

Scholarly and reader friendly

This was my husband's textbook on church history in seminary. I finally bought it--40 years later--and am enjoying the story of the spread of the Gospel through the centuries. It's an easy read, but the print is terribly small. Don't let that discourage you. Someone has said this is the best book ever written outside the Bible. This book demonstrates that the word "history" is misspelled. It should be "his story" because it is God's story of how He worked through human history to bring people to Himself. What a blessing! If you find it too detailed for your interests, skim over those parts and keep going. Reading about the perseverance of believers, the development of the church, and the faithfulness of God--especially the faithfulness of God--is an awesome story.

I love it. I'm only Chapter 6, but the writing is concise and clear and there isn't too much detail to bog you down. It was exactly the kind of church history book I was looking for.

We ordered this because this is the SAME book series my wife studied in Seminary back in the 1990s. It is a valuable tool for the serious student or anyone that wants a good study of the History of Christianity. And the church as well. Highly recommend. Good tool.
