The author discusses the development of colonial empires of France and Great Britain as well as each nations elected officials during that period. The smaller nations are also discussed as is the unification of Germany which the author believes was bad for world history and Italy which he labeled irrelevant. Hazen places the blame of the Great War exclusively on Germany and Australia Hungary.

This is an interesting, but dated, history of Europe. It gives a useful description of the events leading up to World War I and is a good account of the war itself. It is uncritical regarding the behavior of Serbia. We now know from the events in Bosnia in the 1990's that the Serbians are more aggressive than was understood a century ago. Undoubtedly, the author is correct that the Kaiser had no idea of what he was doing. Sadly, many leaders share this failing.

Well organized, well written, easy to follow. An excellent birds-eye view of this period in European history. Shows the causation of major events in a way that a more up-close history could not. Plus ... because this author wrote in the early 1920s, there's a flavor of how events and trends were understood by the people who went through them. Very readable. I also note that the Turks (Muslim loyalists) were performing "unspeakable atrocities" on civilians even back then, a hundred years ago. Nothing new under the sun?

It is difficult to know for whom this book was intended. It was written in 1919, by an American, and the writer possesses all the worst traits of high Victorian language. He refers, for instance, to the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand as dastardly! His treatment of the period is superficial, and when it comes to the Great War he knows only what the popular press has published. He would have done much better to stop at 1914.
If you want a really professional treatment of the period, you cannot do better that Barbara Tuchman's 'The Proud Tower."

Tragic and sad it also shows how the desire for freedom led to many small nation states being established.
