"Given its clear and lucid discussion of potentially confusing concepts and tangled history, this will be a valuable addition to general science collections serving undergraduate and graduate programs in biology and allied life sciences." - E-Streams, Vol. 6, No. 7, July 2003 Promo Copy

Highly readable, entertaining, and thorough. Be aware that there are errors in the Kindle edition that presumably occurred during OCR. For example "By 1920, Descartes had discovered a method of reasoning that he believed would be applicable to all the sciences." The year should read 1620. Thus, the reader (ironically) might have to double check the dates using Wikipedia.

I skimmed this book for background information, and was impressed that Magner's did not interpret and judge ancient history on a modern science basis, but rather presented and evaluated each scientist as he dealt with the information he had, answering the questions presented to him by the culture in which he lived. Magner also did very well explaining scientific ideas to me -- a somewhat scientifically educated, but non-science major.

book is poorly printed. My classmates have the exact same book except their print has better contrast in the pictures
