The History Of Middle-Earth Boxed Set Hardcover – Box set, October 6, 2020
Enhance your purchase
This very special collector’s edition brings together all twelve books into three hardcover volumes—more than 5,000 pages of fascinating Tolkien material—and places them in one matching box. The History Of Middle-Earth Boxed Set is a treasured boxed set for every Tolkien fan.
J.R.R. Tolkien is famous the world over for his unique literary creation, exemplified in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. What is less well known, however, is that he also produced a vast amount of further material that greatly expands upon the mythology and numerous stories of Middle-earth, and which gives added life to the thousand-year war between the Elves and the evil spirit Morgoth, and his terrifying lieutenant, Sauron.
It was to this enormous task of literary construction that Tolkien’s youngest son and literary heir, Christopher, applied himself to produce the monumental and endlessly fascinating series of twelve volumes, The History of Middle-earth.

The books arrived on time and in good condition, but I was immediately concerned by two things - the thickness of each individual volume and the thinness of the paper they were printed on.
The big problem is the paper - open the book anywhere and you don't just see the words on the pages that you are looking at - you clearly see the shadows of words on the other side of the paper and the ones on the page beyond that. I'm not sure that I have *ever* seen a book printed on such thin paper before. To be honest, this spoilt the book - I didn't want to sit down and read the book because seeing the words through the paper was distracting.
Even with the tissue thin paper, the individual volumes are thick enough to be awkward - think dictionary size. Honestly, the whole thing would have been a lot better with thicker paper and being split into 5 or 6 volumes rather than 3.
Fortunately Amazon are good at refunds - these books have gone back, and I will be reading the rest either on Kindle or by buying individual paperback volumes.
update: I reordered a replacement because the first one I received most likely had some pre-existing binding issues. Make sure you check the book bounds upon arrival. They are bricks and therefore loose bounds will result in them falling apart very quickly.
The delivery was poor though.
It must have got bashed around in the mail. No protection or wrapping was placed around it.
