This was written a long time ago. While an f stop is still an fstop, unless you are into historic cameras and processes this book will not help you much. If you are interested in the how and why and the things that come before - you will enjoy this immensely. It is important to know how we got to where we are. If you are a serious photographer, with an interest in this (like me) you will find this a very good book. If you are just wanting to be able to take better photos at 5 fps it won't help.

Though this 1849 book presents a chapter on photographic history, starting in 1802, it is first and foremost a "how to" book for the budding photographer of the era. The writing is excellent and I only wish that current "how to" books were written with the same no nonsense clarity as this one. The book provides general suggestions for setting up a studio and posing subjects as well as detailed instructions for making daguerreotypes, calotypes, cyanotypes, etc. There is even a discussion of using various plant extracts as photographic media. I recommend this book to all who have an interest in the way things used to be and I especially recommend it to those who might wish to dabble in the ancient photographic arts. All illustrations are omitted from the Kindle version but the writing is good enough that the illustrations are not strictly needed.

I have just started learning about photography. As an avid reader and teacher , the first place I start with any new project is a good book to get give me a good background and feel for the terminology and the experts to study in the field. This book is a good overall basic to give someone interested in the hobby of photography a place to start . It satisfied what I needed to get me going. If you are looking for a basic background book about photography as an art and its basic beginnings , this is a book I would choose . Dawn Copley

Guess I was looking for a less technical look at its growth. I would have enjoyed less chemical info and more camera development and the marketing in those days.

Text makes references to images which are completely missing in the book. It was a complete waste of time and space.

Maybe some historians will appreciate this very detailed (but incomplete) record of the history of photography. But for me, it was mostly boring.

This was a marginal read. It was quite detailed on mid-19th century science. From that point of view, it had some interest but only some.
