I teach music appreciation and music history at a university. I used this set as research material in preparing my lectures for a class unit and a seminar on Rock and Roll, and have been using brief excerpts for classroom examples for 10 years. I finally had to upgrade from the VHS version when one of the tapes broke from overuse! The commentary from artists looking back on their own history is excellent. I especially like David Bowie, looking like he just left a photo session for GQ, commenting on a clip of himself as Ziggy Stardust. Gene Simmons of Kiss (out of makeup) commenting on his problems with hairspray is also wonderful, as is Alice Cooper (also out of makeup) talking about the notorious chicken event. While someone looking for extended performances will be disappointed, the short clips with extended commentary by people who experienced the events are perfect for classroom use. Every semester I get a couple of students who want to know where they can get a copy, and one of my graduate students in the seminar was so impressed he chose a series of lesson plans based on the set as a final project!

And I do mean a dime because all these music videos and related materials must have averaged out to be that, a small price to pay for such a comprehensive piece of work. Great service, good product and just what I expected. Some of these artist haven't been seen on tv since their hits made the charts long ago but along comes Marianne Faithfull(As Tears Go By), Arthur conley(Sweet Soul Music), and many others popping out at you on that big screen tv to be enjoyed today. These discs devide rock into eras complete with a little history of the days' events. The observations of the artists and some of their explaination of the personal significance of their work help to round out the feel of Rock N Roll.

This set was bought as a gift for someone who was taking music history in college. It was being used as part of the lectures in class. It is so well compiled that the student wanted the set so he could rewatch the parts he had seen and watch the parts he had not viewed. The set did not disappoint. I would recommend it for any fan of rock and roll.

If I ever find the editor of this DVD series, I will slap them in public. There are glaring content omissions, lots of jumping around chronologically, and the dumbest use of uncensored material ever.

Any interviews with actual Beatles are noticeably absent, among many other things.

The most frustrating thing, however, is the lack of continuity with regards to censorship. If you want to convey the spirit of 'sex, drugs, and rock and roll' with vulgar language and images, knock yourself out. But to have tiny, minute bits of uncensored material - just enough to make it unrated and, at times, not viewable to school-aged students, is just asinine.

I was disappointed by the fact that in this copy/version the interviews were omitted. Still, even for a lover of Rock 'n' Roll there is information and wonderful memories galore. Jammer

This is a great collection of rock and roll history. Everything from the start of rock and roll through the 60's and up to probably the 80's or 90's. There are not a lot of newer artists but this highlights the famous ones that many of today's artists emulate.

Mostly all interviews and talking. Great for a Music History Lesson but not for listening to entire songs.
