About the Author
Rev. Sheldon Dibble was a New England missionary to the Hawaiian Islands. He arrived in the 4th company of missionaries to sail to Hawaii. He was first stationed in Hilo, Hawaii (1831) then later at the mission school at Lahainaluna on Maui island (1836). His native Hawaiian students helped to gather much of the native history in his book.

Dibble is not always accurate in some basic aspects of Hawaiian history. He mixes the chronology, provides inaccurate historical accounts, and often misinterprets the actions of historical figures. It provides a wealth of reasons to dismiss his work. But Dibble's history is profound nevertheless. However it must be read along side the works of his students and those Hawaiian historians who followed; Kamakau, I'i, and Fornander to name a very few.
If you are a reader of Hawaiian History Dibbles work is a must read, and a great addition to your library. If you are looking for an overview of Hawaiian History you are better served with a history written later, more accurate, and less controversial.
