About the Author

Charles Austin Beard (November 27, 1874 - September 1, 1948) was an American historian. He published hundreds of monographs, textbooks and interpretive studies in both history and political science. His works included radical re-evaluation of the Founding Fathers of the United States, whom he believed were more motivated by economics than by philosophical principles. Mary Ritter Beard (August 5, 1876 in Indianapolis, Indiana - August 14, 1958) was an influential American historian and archivist, who played an important role in the women's suffrage movement and was a life-long advocate for social justice through educational and activist roles in both the labor and woman's rights movements. She wrote several books on women's role in history including On Understanding Women (1931), (Ed.) America Through Women's Eyes (1933) and Woman As Force In History: A Study in Traditions and Realities (1946). In addition, she collaborated with her husband, eminent historian Charles Austin Beard on several distinguished works, most notably The Rise of American Civilization (1927). --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

A Concise History with Glaring Omissions

This detailed history was published in 1921. The Beards were known as brilliant historians and excellent storytellers, but the material, rich in information, is dry in the telling. The Beards' enthusiasm for reform is infectious, although perhaps too optimistic given the hundred years since. One must remember the atmosphere of hope that came out of the First World War -- a desperate hope that such a war could not possibly ever be repeated. With their focus on the political and economic history of the nation, the Beards underline that hope by outlying America's progress. A major flaw runs through the book, however: the Beards all but ignore the plight of the people whom the white expansion across the continent displaced. It is an error of choice: the Beards dismiss the entire Plains Wars as annoying skirmishes that had litle to do with the settling of the western regions. With that caveat, there is much in this book to enlighten.

I have not finished this book yet but from what I have read it covers way more than what I learned in history class in school. this was probably intended to be used in the classroom since there are questions at the end of the chapters. I thought that kind of interesting because it made me think about what I read. if your a history buff, this may be boring for you. but if your like me who didn't like history in school but have developed an interest in it later in life, this book is for you. and the best part about it is no homework to hand in and no studying for tests.

History of the United States is a history text book for school children published in 1921. The book starts with the colonial period and runs through the end of World War I. I found the book to be interesting from the beginning until the events that led to the Civil War. From the Civil War onward I found the book to be very wanting, and though it was written nearly a century ago, I found that it contained an agenda, unfortunate like today's history books for school children.

I enjoy reading old history books simply because they going into greater detail about the past (pre 1900) than history books published today, which focus so much on the twentieth century. Another reason I enjoy them so much is that they tend to be written from a different geo-political standpoint, which is why I was a bit disappointed by the book and only rated it three stars.

Even though it is in the format of a textbook (questions at the end of each chapter) and written decades ago, there is nothing lacking in the subject matter and gives one a more complete, realistic view of the history of America. Not like some of the politically correct, watered-down and censored history curriculum they are teaching in schools today.

Perfect read for brushing up on the history of our country. Since this book is free the deal is even sweeter. I believe citizen and even non citizen would benefit from reading this book. The only negative is that it ends at the conclusion of WWI.

This is an excellent history text, and may be being used as such. It touches well on many of the developing themes of our nation. Obviously others were excluded due to a number of reasons, including the desire to keep the book under 10,000 pages (I'm sure).
The rating is because I was left with the impression the editor decided to abbreviate in various places without considering the content and flow of history.

I am embarrassed that I haven't read this book before. Although I found it a bit slow to get into, I am riveted now. Election day is tomorrow; I find comfort in Zinn's tome just in the fact that there has always been civic unrest. Our democracy is like a chariot with the wheels out of alignment--but our country still manages to function.
