As Stella finds ways to get the information she's looking for, she learns Richard's death was intentional -- it was no accident, he was mudrdered! This sets Stella off on a quest for vengeance which pits her against a secret cabal of judicial vigilantes, who stop at nothing to protect themselves from discovery.
This first in a series of Stella Cole novels is a totally different take from Maslen's Gabriel Hawk novels. Stella is a once-honorable policewoman who has become down and dirty by a system she trusted. While Gabriel Hawk has psychological issues, Stella Cole has run off the rails. She's a one-woman wrecking crew out for blood. Her metamorphosis is tragic, but understandable, and definitely pulls you along with her. Add in a few very startling twists (one in particular will have you gasping) and Maslen's very descriptive prose and you are set for a violent, but gripping read! I can't wait for the next installment!
It's in my Top-3-for-2020, an absolute smash-hit!
It's a police procedural, about a British police detective, whose husband is killed in a hit-and-run accident, and her decision to find the people responsible, and to extract revenge for his death.
This is the first book in Andy Maslen's trilogy covering her investigation, and I'm planning to get the other books (on Kindle), right away.
You should, too.
Enjoy the suspense
In his new series we meet Stella Cole. Her life has been ripped apart by a tragic accident. Grief has taken her down a dreadful spiral where nothing is the same as it once had been. Imagine how the mental threads of a hoped for recovery are stretched when she learns that the accident was actually a planned and targeted murder. Following this realization her life gains a purpose, albeit a dark and deadly one. Vengeance and retribution will be hers.
This was to me an easy to imagine course of action from a complex and interesting character. Well done, Andy!

The majority of books in any genre require us to accept improbable situations but, for me, this story was lacking in credibility, in particular with regard to the subterfuge employed in order to acquire first a handgun and later a supply of ammunition after the reader is made acutely aware of the strict security surrounding these items.
It is apparent that the majority of reviewers enjoyed the book but it is highly unlikely that I will complete the trilogy. However, I will still be looking for further offerings by Andy Maslen having thoroughly enjoyed most of those which I have read.
But. And it's a big "but". After the first chapter I was hooked and I was really rooting for Stella Cole all the way to the last page. You are taken on mazy journey as Cole incurs significant emotional trauma and has to find her way out of her own deep and dark black hole. From there she has to confront her demons and find a way to overcome a shadowy world of power and the elite within the establishment. Simply put this book is un-putdownable!
Now my biggest concern is do I want this author to give me an urgent second helping of DI Cole or to release a new Gabriel Wolfe. Either way I am a winner.
I quite enjoyed the book apart from long descriptive passages relating to guns and ammunition which bored me to death as I have absolutely no interest whatever in weapons. It is a fairly violent and graphic book so be prepared for that plus the bad language which you would expect in this type of book.
I'm undecided yet whether or not I will purchase Books 2 and 3 of this trilogy
The absolute horror of your husband and baby daughter's death, by a hit and run driver, has to be enough to send anyone into a pit of despair. But for DI Stella Cole, coming back from that pit, has been a nightmare she's unable to fully escape from.
Returning to work, a job she loves and hopefully will help to bring her back to some sort of normality doesn't quite go as she was expecting it to.
Stella finds out the person jailed for the death of her family, wasn't the guilty party, but a fall guy.
So her quest begins, determined to find out the truth puts her own life in danger. Corruption in high places is prevalent, making her search for the truth, even more hazardous. The need for revenge gets stronger by the day, making the reader question her sanity.
A story that grabs your imagination to the full, a rollercoaster of thrills at every page turn. Impossible to put down, even for eating and sleeping. It's a story that really does test your emotions to the extreme.
The characters are varied, believable and well crafted, particularly Stella, whom I must follow as her quest for truth and justice isn't finished. I need more!
New to this author's books, but one I will most certainly be following in the future!
