Product Description

Product Description

Hitachi 729402 1/2-Inch Diamond Grit Drill Bit

From the Manufacturer

The Hitachi 729402 1/2-Inch Diamond Grit Drill Bit can drill through glass, marble, class-5 porcelain, granite and slate. It significantly outperform the standard carbide glass and tile bits on the market today, both in speed of drilling and the number of holes that can be drilled per bit. This bit feature a raised lip with diamond grit particles that are uniquely sintered in place. The process allows the diamonds to adhere to the bit and not grind down as quickly as other sintering processes. The Hitachi diamond grit drill bit bodies are constructed of hardened and tempered alloy steel. They require water lubrication during use. This can be simply applied with a spray bottle producing a small puddle of water, that is spiral fed down the reverse flute threads, on the bit to continuously supply water to the cutting edge, cooling the bit tip and extending its life. This bit is ideal for contractors, serious do-it-yourselfers, machine shops and mechanics. Hitachi offers the best durability and speed for general purpose drilling applications and has a complete line of professional bits for wood, metal, plastic and light masonry drilling. The Hitachi 729402 1/2-Inch Diamond Grit Drill Bit is warranted to the original purchaser to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 30-days from the original purchase date. Every Hitachi accessory is designed to the highest standards and is rigorously tested for both performance and durability. Since its inception, Hitachi has pioneered innovative technologies that have improved the quality of craftsmanship worldwide. Hitachi is a leader in power tool research and development and has achieved many firsts in the power tool industry. Today, Hitachi continues the tradition of innovation and engineering with new features in addition to classic quality.

This core drill was able to drill a dozen holes in a very hard ceramic tile along with mortar and cement backer board. I estimate that each hole required about 3 minutes of drilling using water to keep the bit cool. Each time it produced a small plug core and a perfect hole.
Before these core drill bits I had drilled 4 holes with solid (no core drill) silicon carbide bits. Each hole took 15 minutes and the bit was worthless after drilling a single hole. These core drills get the job done faster at a much lower cost per hole drilled.

I use the bit to drill a hole (or two) in wine bottles so I can stuff them with mini lights (60-75) for commemorative bottles. I use a constant water flow on the glass to minimize stresses in the bottle and wear on the drill bit.

I am very happy with this product so far after 6-8 bottles drilled. No bit wear noticed yet.

Installed water filtration system under sink and needed hole drilled in existing countertop for water outlet. When we weren't able to hire someone to take on this small of a job, my wife and I decided to do it ourselves. Checked out "youtube" for some guidance and found out what we needed in terms of a drill bit. There were cheaper ones on Amazon, but we were familiar with Hitachi brand name. This bit seemed like a good mid-price alternative. Amazon delivered as promised and we went to work. Bit cut a nice clean hole thru some fairly thick granite (approx. 3/4"). Took about 20 minutes of careful drilling (i.e. minimal pressure on drill). No problem keeping bit cool with a water spray bottle. Drill bit doesn't look any worse for the wear, but keep in mind that we only used it for one hole. An initially daunting job made simple-- daunting because the cost of replacing cracked or broken granite would have been extremely expensive.

Beware that the bit size listed is incorrect. The packaging states this is a 1/2" bit, but it isn't. After removing bit from packaging, the actual size stamped on the bit shank is 12mm - 15/32". This is smaller than 1/2". I went ahead and drilled a hole in marble tile, and sure enough it was smaller than 1/2", so I wasn't able to use it for my intended purpose. Stone, glass and ceramic tiles are unforgiving when it comes to hole size. I had to spend a great deal of time enlarging the hole with other bits and a dremel to get to correct 1/2" size. Very frustrating, and a huge waste of time.

The packaging should have the correct size listed. I shouldn't have to open the package and read the shank to get the actual size.

Used this to bore one hole through 1-1/4" granite in about ten minutes. It started well without skipping around and marring the surface, needed just a little water, which didn't make a big mess, and voila. Can't speak to longevity, but bit seems like it has plenty of life left.
