Both the DS18DSAL and the WH18DSAL are powered by long-lasting 1.5 Ah lithium-ion slide batteries that deliver professional power in the most compact, lightweight, and ergonomically designed tool bodies on the market. Because they don't contain a vertical cell chamber like those found in post-style batteries, these new slide batteries glide easily into place and allow for an ergonomic handle that's comfortable to hold. Additionally, because these lithium-ion slide batteries weigh roughly 50-percent less than NiCd or NiMH batteries, the result is a more balanced tool body that minimizes user fatigue while maximizing control and accuracy.
Lithium-Ion Technology for Long-Lasting Power
As with all of Hitachi's lithium-ion tools, the lithium-ion slide-type batteries receive a steady stream of power for the duration of every battery charge, from the moment the trigger is pulled until the charge cycle is exhausted. These batteries also offer up to three times the number of charge cycles of traditional batteries, and they come with a patented battery charger with unique circuitry that prevents overheating or power loss, saving you both time and replacement costs.
Innovative, User-Friendly Features
The DS18DSAL and the WH18DSAL offer a host of user-friendly features to help you get the job done quickly and easily. First, metal belt hooks keep the tools conveniently in reach at all times while LED job lights illuminate the work surface for accurate bit alignment in dim environments. Additionally, responsive, variable-speed triggers help you reach the right speed and power to match the job.
Two Powerful Tools for Both Light and Heavy Applications
To help you tackle a variety of tasks, the DS18DSAL has a 1/2-inch ratcheting keyless metal chuck and a 22+1 clutch with 22 torque settings and a drill mode for ultimate precision and control in both forward and reverse. For heavier applications, the WH18DSAL delivers 1,280 in/lbs of torque to tighten bolts, drive lags, and sink screws.
Bonus Flashlight for Adjustable Illumination
As a bonus, this kit comes with Hitachi's UB18DAL lithium-Ion flashlight. Adjustable to five lighting positions, this flashlight stands alone while you work and can be aimed where you need illumination. A shoulder strap makes for easy, comfortable carrying, and a low-battery indicator light helps ensure that you don't run out of power mid-use. And because the UB18DAL runs on the same 18-volt slide batteries as the driver drill, it shares the same lithium-ion benefits of long battery life, lasting power per charge, and lightweight convenience.
For even more value and peace of mind, each of these tools is covered by Hitachi's lifetime lithium-ion tool warranty and two-year lithium-ion battery warranty.

1. There is no battery indicator and these Li-ion batteries give you full juice until they are dry, so avoid surprises and check your voltage with a meter (and recharge if necessary) before you start a big job. The good thing with Li's is that you don't have to wait until they die before you charge them since they don't have "memory" like the old NiCad's that would shortchange you if you did that.
2. Don't even bother with an adapter chuck for the driver, it's not practical to drill with a driver, the drill is for drilling (without the clutch of course). This is one of the big advantages for me, you can drill pilots and drive screws without switching bits back and forth, can't see why I would want to install a chuck to put in a drill bit and then have to change it to drive a screw, then change it back to drill again.Read more ›
On a whim I picked up a DeWalt 12v drill/impact driver comboDEWALT DCK211S2 12-Volt Max Drill/Driver / Impact Driver Combo Kit, got it home, and built some deck furniture. While it worked, it just felt like a toy. The drill struggled in Mahogany, like it needed more oomph. The impact driver didn't have a clutch, and was ALWAYS impacting. Noisy as heck. I loved the weight and size, though, but it had to go.
After spending WAY too much time staring at all the options, I found this Hitachi set, and I have to say, I'm a happy guy.
+ Tool case, while not metal, is still nicer than a bag. Also, you can store the drills with the batteries attached *AND* bits still in place. Nice!
+ Size, weight - I'm into proper Ergonomics, and these fit in my hands great. Weight is about a pound more than the compact DeWalt, but still well balanced. Being able to stand on the battery is also crucial, otherwise my bits are always landing on dirt, rocks, etc.
+ The light isn't a wimpy LED light! Not that I plan on using it, and I like the IDEA of LED and all that, but they just aren't bright enough for outdoor work. Occasionally I use my LED headlight, but these tired eyes need Lumens!
+ The impact driver has a proper clutch! This means it won't start getting noisy until the last few threads.Read more ›
