Editorial Reviews

2012 release from the Melodic Hard Rock band. Departure is the brainchild of American Multi-instrumentalist Mike Walsh who has a vast experience in the music industry. Over the years he has worked on numerous projects, such as Mark Thompson-Smith (Praying Mantis) and Dean Fasano's Message. Mike has also worked with Bon Jovi over the years as well as having produced, scored, written and arranged several New Jersey Bands. To ice the cake Mike has had the privilege of playing alongside such greats as Glen Burtnick and Aldo Nova.

"Hitch a ride" is the brand new fourth studio album by American melodic rock band "Departure", breaking a decade of creative silence since the previous album while resuming their partnership with "Escape" music. The line up feautres founder Mike Walsh on guitars and keyboards, bassist Ryan Walsh and drummer Duey Ribestallo, joined by up-and-coming vocalist Andi Kravljaca of melodic metallers "Silent Call".

Despite the intervening decade "Hitch a ride" is a fiathful continuation of the established melodic rock band of "Departure". You can expect technical guitar driven melodic rock optimizing on vocal, keyboard and guitar harmonies while extending its themes beyond the stereotypical love subject, including war and science fiction. Just about every song on "Hitch a ride" opens on a forceful guitar melody, building up to an unforgettable chorus and that's all a fan can reall ask of a release of this kind.

Truth be told, the opening track, "No where to run" is an indredibly forceful statement in 2012 melodic rock which causes the rest of the track list to fall short in comparison while featuring quite a few competent adult oriented rockers in "Soldier of fortune", "Fly" and "This is my time". Overall the new "Departure" album does justice to one of the best AOR outfits to come out of the late'90s and should satisfy any fan of guitar-driven extra-melodic rock.
