About the Author

Andrew Roberts took a first in Modern History at Cambridge. He has been a professional historian since the publication of his life of Lord Halifax , The Holy Fox, in 1991, followed by Eminent Churchillians in 1994 . He contributes regularly to the Sunday Telegraph. Lives in Knightsbridge, London, and has two children. His Salisbury won the Wolfson History Prize in 2000. His books include Napoleon and Wellington in 2001, Hitler and Churchill (based on BBC-2 series) in 2003. What Might Have Been (editor) in 2004. His History of the English Speaking Peoples Since 1900 was published in 2006 and won the Walter Bagehot Prize . --This text refers to the paperback edition.

Delightful Essay Contrasting Leadership Styles

I found the book fascinating and read most of it in one sitting. The author's intent is to provide a comparison of two massively competent leaders pitted against one another, with the implied idea that Churchill's was better because he was on the right side. In fact, the author stumbles over himself sometimes to remind us several times that Hitler was evil (which, of course, he was). But after reading, I came away with the two both being geniuses and both being spellbinding leaders who brought out the best in their subordinates. Both had severe limitations as well. And the two leadership styles were complete contrasts. So what are the lessons here? Both leaders did many things right. Both did many things wrong. I think the case can be made that Hitler's style finally proved his undoing--he held the reigns too tightly and surrounded himself with sycophants. But remember that WWII was a very near thing. The author makes the point that after the Americans entered the war in a serious way, Churchill's supreme leadership was gradually eclipsed by Roosevelt and Eisenhower. But Churchill ultimately comes out a hero, which I like because I greatly admire him. Fascinating book? Yes. Worth reading? Absolutely.

I've read a number of bios on Churchill, but this book added a lot to what I already knew about him. In addition, it cast a rather interesting look at Hitler. Not anything that would incline one to admire or respect him, but just enough to flesh him out as a human being, depraved though he was. Certainly no substitute for in depth biographies of either subject, but Roberts respects the reader enough to let him/her draw his own conclusions about both.

Liked this "compare and contrast" of Hitler and Churchill -- two very different people living at the same time and through the same trials. Up until the end -- when the author felt necessary to justify Churchill in spite of his present-day detractors. There will always be nay-sayers, deniers, etc etc, and for the vast masses of perceptive people -- protesting against them lends them more credence -- more than they're worth, certainly. It's an interesting book, especially the part about how easily people are led astray by a charismatic devil.

An eye opener. I recommend this book to any reader who wants to read real, unbiased history. The book opened my eyes as to who Churchill really was. A great man, but with a lot of flaws and contradictions, just like any other human being. I also learned that Hitler, evil as he was, was not intent on conquering the planet, as many historians makes us believe.
