This is an excellent book. General Franco is perhaps one of the most misunderstood leaders in the history of the world. In this country, we are used to hearing Franco, dictator, equals bad. Unfortunately for the liberal side of the world, it isn't always that cut and dry.
This book is extremely well researched. And all the other work I've done on Franco has indicated that if it were not for him, Spain would have ended up a Soviet satellite state. In other words, in the western part of Europe, we would have ended up with a Soviet satellite state, along the lines of East Germany or the People's Republic of Poland. Franco was not perfect by any means. But, he was not racist. Admittedly, he was not overly fond of Jews for religious reasons. He always acknowledged that. But, disagreeing with somebody religiously and wanting them all dead is something entirely different. The fact that he was able to save 60,000 Jews, and the book does indicate that, despite the title which indicates only 40,000, is a true indicator of where in fact his feelings were. It needs to be pointed out that Hitler was no fascist. In fact Hitler was very little different than Stalin. There is a reason that the party he led was called the National Socialist German Workers Party. The fact that it was definitely socialist, and a Workers Party, makes it very clear that he was no fascist, but rather an extreme socialist with a racist streak.
Mussolini was a fascist. He did not persecute Jews until Hitler gave him no choice. And yes, I know someone's going to bring up the fact that Franco did give Hitler a document stating names of every Jew living in Spain. But, I will point out, he never allowed Hitler to do anything with those Jews, and he allowed many Jews to enter Spain who were not from Spain, and had never had any ancestry from Spain. He gave that list to Hitler simply to keep him off his back for a while.
I'm not so sure I would even call Franco a fascist. In reality, he played off the Falange against the Carlists and the liberal monarchists. He himself, was always more along the lines of a radically conservative monarchist. He was an extremely devout Catholic, and made sure that Spain remained such during his rule. But, he was able to skillfully playoff all three groups against each other, and this allowed him to make sure that Spain did not reenter a Civil War which she could barely afford the first time let alone again.
There is no doubt that he could be brutal. If you were any kind of a leftist, you ended up in one of his jails, or very dead. I don't really blame him for that. It was the only way to maintain the stability of the state. Communists have no interest in maintaining the stability of the state. They're internationalists by definition. I can totally understand why he rejected them and everything they stood for. He was a Spanish Patriot. He should not be condemned for that.
This book is excellent in so far as the story it tells. It does not tell the whole story of Franco, but it does not intend to. Its goal is strictly to tell how Franco was able to stop Hitler. Insofar as it does that, it does it quite well.

When I watched The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich again recently, I was stunned how the documentary totally glosses over Spain's refusal to join the Axis. I had not noticed this oversight until reading Hitler Stopped by Franco by Jane and Burt Boyar. This book highlights a corner of history that is usually illuminated dimly, if at all. Other reviewers on this page have noted the decisive advantage Hitler would have gained by attaining free access to Africa through Gibraltar; their commentary has touched on the 40,000 Jews afforded safe haven in Spain - a conservative estimate, because documents within the book place the figure at 60,000. But these points are worth repeating. Conventional wisdom is that Franco was a dictator and therefore bad. But the big picture of World War II, and the Holocaust in particular, should include a more prominent portrayal of Franco's role. After Spain exhausted her manpower and other resources during a brutal civil war - to stop a Communist threat, by the way - Franco might have been tempted to accede to Hitler in return for the offer of food and supplies. Instead, Franco resisted, thus saving tens of thousands of Jews and alleviating the Allies' War efforts.

As an American, I knew nothing about Francisco Franco, save that he was a dictator and a contemporary of Hitler and Mussolini. This book reveals that Franco was not of the same character of those two men.
Franco saved Spain from a Soviet backed communist revolution in the Spanish Civil War. He helped up to 40,000 Jews escape Hitler's concentration camps. And he stopped Hitler from marching through Spain, taking Gibraltar from the British, closing the Mediterranean Sea, maintaining control of the Middle East and North Africa (and their abundant natural resources), and making Europe impenetrable to any Allied invasions.
Even under threat of invasion, Franco stood up to Hitler. He warned him that any Nazi invasion of Spain would be resisted with guerilla warfare, a form of warfare invented by the Spanish. 20 Wermacht divisions waited at the French-Spanish border for Hitler's order to invade, but the order never came.
Finally, Operation Torch, the allied invasion of North Africa, cut the Nazis off from vital oil and mineral supplies, opened the door for an invasion of Italy, and forced Hitler to spread his forces over three fronts (Normandy, Russia, and Italy); without Francisco Franco, none of this would have been possible.
Francisco Franco was shortchanged by history, due to communist propaganda unwittingly spread by the U.S. news media. He was not a ruthless man like Hitler and Mussolini; he was the unsung hero of the Spanish Civil War and World War II. Finally, the truth about this brave man has been revealed.

Thousands of Jews Saved by Franco
Reviewed in Canada on January 7, 2021Verified Purchase
During Spanish Civil War, the Republican government transferred most of the gold in the Spanish treasury to their friends in the Soviet Union. When the war finally ended, Spain was worn out and starving. To make matters worse, she was sandwiched between the Germans in Nazi occupied France and the English at Gibraltar in the south. Hilter wanted the rock of Gibraltar for its strategic importance, but he needed Spain's cooperation. The last thing Franco wanted was to drag Spain through another war, but Hitler expected Spain to return the favour of Germany's assistance in the Spanish Civil War. Had Franco succumbed to Hitler's demands, Spain would have become an outright enemy of the English, risking blockades and military action against an already starving population. On the other hand, failure to work with Hitler would have resulted in a Nazi invasion of Spain from the north. Hitler assured Franco that the Allies would lose the war and the future was with Germany. He insisted that Germany would take care of all of Spain's needs. Just about everyone assumed that Spain would join the war alongside the Axis Powers. But then a funny thing happened: Franco stopped Hitler.
That's not hyperbole. Hitler could have won the war had Franco allowed Nazi troops to March through Spain and take Gibraltar at the south, giving them control of both the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa. So how did Franco stop them? And why? You'll find out in this book.
This book is written in the form of a novel but is well reference and jam packed with historical information. I can understand why the authors chose this format, as a typical historical text would be less accessible to the average reader. Moreover, the authors, although American, were friends with Franco's surviving family members, who gave interviews for this book.
In addition to learning how and why Franco stopped Hitler, you'll also get window into Franco's only meeting with Hitler, and what prompted Hitler to once tell Mussolini that he would rather have "four of his teeth pulled" than to have to meet with Franco again. You'll learn how Wilhelm Canaris, the chief of the German military intelligence service, betrayed his own government and acted as a spy for Franco against the Nazis (a crime for which he was eventually executed). Finally, you'll learn how Franco opened the Spanish border to tens of thousands of Jewish refugees from Nazi occupied France and elsewhere.
It is unfortunate that people know so little about this true history. People think of Franco as a quasi-fascist dictator who was somehow sympathetic to Nazi Germany during the Second World War. The truth is he was an anti-communist crusader who did anything necessary to keep Spain out of the Second World War, even if it meant "buying peace with words" by paying lip service to the Nazis.
Franco's greatest fault may have been his ineptitude at publicity, which was something his communist enemies excelled at both then and now. But if we are to judge Franco's interaction with Hitler by his deeds, the fact remains that he disrupted Hitler's plans for Gibraltar, thereby giving the Allies an advantage in the war effort where none had been before. And he did this despite Hitler's constant threats, intimidation, and deception.
