Hitler's Bodyguard

1 Season

Season 1
4.7 out of 5 stars (13) IMDb 8.1/10

How did Adolf Hitler manage to survive more than 40 assassination attempts--some by his own generals? Using captured SS documents and eyewitness interviews, this documentary series reveals the secrets of the elite bodyguards who swore loyalty oaths to the Führer himself. It explains how Hitler cultivated rivalries among his security services to ensure his safety, and how his purposefully unpredictable behavior saved his life several times. Carefully assembled archival footage offers rare glimpses inside Hitler's infamous strongholds--the Berghof, the Wolf's Lair, and the Berlin bunker. Computer-generated graphics detail the security measures used in his trains, planes, and touring cars. And meticulous re-enactments bring lost incidents to life. In 13 riveting episodes, this Military Channel favorite brings fresh, fascinating context to the 20th century's most evil and destructive tyrant.

This series seems to appeal most to those who do not already know much about Hitler, Nazis, pre-WWII Germany and the details of how Hitler and the Nazis rose to power, started WWII and then lost WWII.

If you are familiar with gold standard series "The Nazis: A Warning From History" and "The World at War", then this series will probably be a bit boring at times. There is some additional detail about Hitler's bodyguard that is not found in the those gold standard series. And it is definitely worth watching.

Regardless of where you are coming from in terms of Hitler/Nazi/WWII knowledge this series has the following pros and cons:

Pros:

A few animations and illustrations of Hitlers' monster-leader train are totally sick (but still, not enough). Some details about his air travel that are not found elsewhere. And a few stories about assassination attempts rarely mentioned. There is a pretty good description of the allied assassination plot to be done during Hitler's tea house walks that almost was carried out but is rarely even mentioned.

Cons:

Use of the same footage is far too prevalent. Almost no attempt is made at accuracy with what is being discussed and what is being shown. This is the same problem that plagues award winning series like Ken Burns' "Civil War" so some people will not be as bothered by it as others. I find the reuse in "Civil War" to be just fine. But this series overuses the same footage far too much and has far too little accuracy in matching actual faces with names being discussed.

plot: LITTLE KNOWN HITLER'S PERSONAL ROLLING FORTRESS TRAIN~

part of the Hitler's Body Guard series~ the focus on this one is Hitler's Personal Train. a rolling fortress on wheels. What kept Hitler safe and sound was his lack of a travel plan. he has several trains and sometimes he was not on it. This shows his top secret train and the luxury on it~ also was his own water supply and SS body guards who traveled with him. After 1942 he rarely used the train and travled by plane. This is a very good and informative program. some actual video and info from people who build and or worked on it. Some near misses on attempts to kill him~
I would give this 5 STARS and highly recomend it any history or train buff.

This is a very good and thorough show about an obscure but interesting topic, Hitler's personal protection before and during World War II.

It is very detailed, too much so at times although as a documentary, a little boring detail is to be expected.

The most distracting part though is when Hitler's remarks are voiced, an over-the-top voice sounding like a looney Disney villain is used. Now, Hitler was arguably the most evil man who ever lived, but voicing him in a Saturday morning cartoon "evil" voice just really detracts from the professionalism of this documentary. We now know from the captured 11 minutes of audio from Finland that when Hitler wasn't raving on the rostrum, he spoke in a normal everyday voice. It just is embarrassing how the voice actor reads Hitler's comments in this show to make him sound like an evil Mr. Bean. Is this a professional documentary or a cartoon?

Other than that pet-peeve, this is a very good documentary series and I am glad that I purchased it.

I think this is an excellent product that zooms into the bizarreness of Hitlet's Third Reich and the ridiculously complicated and bureaucratic layers of security that were built around him.
I think the name of this series, "Hitler's Bodyguard," sells the product short as each episode explores far more than the security infrastructure around Hitler. It delves into the politics, the psychology and the consequences that the existence of the Third Reich brought to Europe. I also liked the fact that some of the footage in this series as unique to this series and does not contain oft-repeated scenes that show up in every mass-produced Nazi/World War II documentary.
It is rather true that some of the scenes that are picked up by this series are used perhaps more often than they ought, but the narration is good enough that it makes clear that sometimes, such oft-repeated footage is not necessarily germane to the conversation at hand.
And, yes, I do agree that the voice acting for Adolf Hitler is a little, well, silly. It's almost comical if you think about it and, to this day, I don't know what the producers were thinking when they decided on this rather odd voice. All the other Nazis spoke fairly normally.
As an owner of "The Nazis: A Warning From History," "The World at War" and William Shirer's "The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich," three of the most authoritative sources on Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler, I enthusiastically encourage anyone considering this series to add it to the library at once.

This is an awesome series. It provides a lot of great information about the approach to protecting the Fuhrer. Just be aware that there is a lot of repetition of events from episode to episode, which can be a bit annoying.
